GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Sophomore Kelvin Jones (Sheffield Lake, Ohio/Brookside) recorded his fifth double-double of the season and seventh of his career as the Hiram College men's basketball team topped DePauw (Ind.) 72-65 on Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers are now 15-6 on the season and 9-5 in NCAC play, while the Tigers drop to 7-14, 3-11.
The win secures Hiram's first season sweep over DePauw in program history. In addition, the victory clinches a spot in the NCAC Tournament for the Terriers.
Jones finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win. He went 6-of-10 from the field and knocked down 8-of-9 free throw attempts.
Senior J.J. Woodson (Oakwood Village, Ohio/Bedford) also reached double figures, finishing with 14 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists.
Junior Jeremiah Thomas (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) and sophomore Isaiah Matthews (Orlando, Fla./Eastridge) each added eight points for Hiram.
The Terriers trailed 8-3 early, but reeled off seven straight points to take their first lead of the contest at 10-8 with 12:14 left in the opening half.
DePauw would answer and open a 17-13 lead, before Hiram went on an 12-0 run to build a 25-17 lead with just under five minutes left in the first half. During the run, the Terriers held the Tigers scoreless for nearly six minutes of play.
Hiram held a 31-25 lead heading into halftime.
After the Tiger pulled to within 36-32 in the second half, the Terriers would go on a 8-0 run to open up a 12-point lead at 44-32.
A 3-pointer from Woodson at the 15:06 mark allowed Hiram to open up its largest lead of the game at 49-35.
DePauw would chip away and pulled to within 58-53 with 7:22 to play. Hiram would answer right back with a 10-2 run to push its lead back to 13 points at 68-55 with just over two minutes to play.
The Tigers would have one more answer and trimmed the Terrier lead to 70-65 with 28 seconds left. Hiram was able to beat the press on the ensuing inbounds and sophomore Paul Ortiz (Canton, Ohio/McKinley Senior) put the game away with a dunk.
Both team struggled shooting with Hiram finishing 19-of-53 (35.8 percent) and DePauw going 22-of-68 (32.4 percent). The Terriers were able to make good on 26-of-32 (81.3 percent) free throw tries, while the Tigers were 12-of-16 (75.0 percent).
Hiram also dominated the rebounding battle for the second straight day, outrebounding the Tigers 47-32.
The Terriers will now return home for three of their final four home games of the regular season, beginning with a 8 p.m. contest against Wooster on Wednesday.
