Willie Chandler has been named head men's basketball coach at Misericordia University, where he spent the last five months as interim head coach, Chuck Edkins, director of athletics, has announced.

"It gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of Will Chandler as our head men's basketball coach," said Edkins.  "He has proven himself as a strong leader and role model for the men's basketball program and Misericordia community.  He is a true Misericordia person, from his roots as the most highly touted men's basketball player in program history to a first-rate assistant coach and recruiter.  He will continue to put his mark on the men's basketball program while making the MU community extremely proud."

A member of the Misericordia Athletics Hall of Fame, Chandler has guided the Cougars to a 10-9 record in his first season as head coach after spending the last six seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater.

Chandler was a four-time Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Player of the Year and ended his career as the second-leading scorer in NCAA D-III history with 2,898 points.

He was a three-time All-American and led the nation in scoring twice and spent five seasons playing professionally throughout Europe, South America and in the United States Basketball League.

Chandler led the Cougars to four consecutive post-season appearances, including one trip to the PAC championship game.

Chandler, who earned a bachelor's degree in business administration, holds nine school career records and five school single-game records.  He was a four-time Misericordia/Wendy's Athlete of the Year.
