ST. MARY'S CITY, MD- Christopher Newport used an 11-0 run to end the first half on a high note…and then cruised to an 83-67 victory Wednesday night over St. Mary's College of Maryland. It was the sixth straight win for the 10th-ranked Captains, who are now 15-1 overall and 9-0 atop the Capital Athletic Conference.

CNU was led by junior guard Kevin Regimbal, who scored 17 points and also contributed eight rebounds and four steals. Junior Tim Daly, the Player of the Week in the CAC this week, posted 15 points and eight rebounds.

"The end of the first half was big for us," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "During a timeout late in the first half, we talked about getting after it before halftime and that really helped us." CNU led at the break, 35-26, after a first half that saw the lead change hands four times.

CNU began the game with a 13-2 flourish that saw Regimbal score the first eight points of the game for the Captains. St. Mary's bounced back and went ahead, but never by more than two points.

The Captains never relinquished the lead after halftime, and stretched the advantage to as many as 19 in the second stanza. CNU made 18 of 23 free throws in the second half to hold off the Seahawks, and finished the night 26 of 38 at the charity stripe.

Christopher Newport played the game without the services of sophomore Marcus Carter, who suffered a concussion on Saturday in CNU's win over York at the Freeman Center.

"You don't replace a Marcus Carter with just one guy," Krikorian said. "We knew we had to have several guys step up their games and that's what happened."

Junior guard Rayshard Brown registered 14 points, and senior forward Hunter Wetherell and sophomore guard Aaron McFarland both posted 13 points as the Captains put five players in double figures.

St. Mary's, now 8-8 overall and 4-5 in the CAC, was led by sophomore guard Delaszo Smith's 27 points. CNU out-rebounded the Seahawks, 44-38, and held SMCM to just 38 percent shooting for the night. Christopher Newport is fourth in the country in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just 37 percent shooting for the season.

CNU pulled even with St. Mary's in the all-time series with the triumph. Both teams have now won nine times in the 18-game all-time series. The squads will square off again at the Freeman Center on February 17th.

Christopher Newport is scheduled to play Saturday at Frostburg State with tipoff slated for 3:00 p.m. Due to impending wintry weather, please check back with CNUsports.com for possible updates to the schedule.
