CUA Triumphs at No. 24 Scranton, 73-62

Scranton, Pa. – The Catholic University of America men's basketball earned a key Landmark victory on Saturday afternoon on the road, defeating No. 24 Scranton, 73-62. Senior All-American Bryson Fonville led the way for head coach Steve Howeswith 21 points, nine assists and four steals.

The Cardinals built a 19-point first half lead, 43-24, and held off a late Scranton charge to improve to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in conference action.

Fonville impressive effort was key in the CUA victory as leading scorer Jay Howardwas held to only six points due to foul trouble.

Both junior forward Corey Stanford and rookie guard Andre Mitchell stepped up in place of Catholic's star player, adding 16 point each. Stanford narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds and added four 3-pointers. 

Senior guard Kyle Phanord matched Stanford's output with four triples of his own as he was one of four Cardinals in double-figure scoring with 12 points.

Scranton was led by forward Brendan Boken who registered game-highs with 32 points and 15 rebounds, but no other Royals player was able to score more than 11.

Both teams shot over 47 percent from the field and 46 percent from 3-point range, but CUA was able to knock down five more shots from long range. The Cardinals also owned the advantage at the free throw line, hitting eight more attempts from the charity stripe.

Winners of four straight and nine of its last 10, Catholic will look to keep its momentum going with another road, Landmark game this Wednesday night at Juniata.
