NEWARK, N.J. (January 13, 2016) - Senior forward Jordan McDaniel tied his career-high with 32 points and became the 16th player in program history to score 1,000 career points, and the Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team earned a thrilling 76-75 overtime victory over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival Ramapo College Wednesday night in The Golden Dome Arena.

With the win, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 6-2 in the NJAC and 11-4 overall. Ramapo drops to 5-3 in the conference and 9-6 overall as Rutgers-Newark takes over sole possession of second place in the conference standings and remains one game behind first place New Jersey City University.

McDaniel came into Wednesday's game needing a career-high-tying 32 points to reach 1,000 for his career and he did just that, hitting a pair of free throws in the overtime period and ending the game with 32 points on 11-of-19 shooting. The veteran forward also came up huge on the final possession, blocking the Roadrunner attempt at a game-winner as time expired.

Sophomore guard Tyler Ofray hit a driving layup with 19 seconds left to put the Scarlet Raiders on top at the end, driving hard down the right side of the lane for 11th and 12th points of the night and sixth of the overtime period. He added six rebounds and three assists.

McDaniel scored 32 points for the second time in as many games, adding six boards, two steals and a blocked shot to his line. He has now scored 30-plus three times this season and 20-plus nine times, and is averaging 21.1 points and 7.1 rebounds in 15 outings.

Senior guard John Snow had 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, six rebounds and three assists, and senior forward David Azoroh had four points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Ramapo went on top by three on the first possession of the extra period as a loose ball deflected to senior forward Frank Nock and he hit a three-pointer. McDaniel would hit two foul shots, the second serving as his 1,000th point, to pull R-N within one, before two at the line from Ofray helped the Raiders to their first lead of the overtime with 3:38 on the clock.

Four-straight Ramapo points put the guests back on top, before a big layup from Snow pulled the Scarlet Raiders within one (73-72) and Ofray's first layup of the OT gave the hosts a one point lead with 1:04 left. A Nock layup helped Ramapo back in front to set the stage for Ofray's game-winner with 19 seconds left and McDaniel's block at the top of the key as time expired.

Overtime featured one tie and six lead changes which added up to eight ties and 10 lead changes in the final 25 minutes of action.

Rutgers-Newark shot 44.6 percent (25-for-56) from the field, 38.1 percent (8-for-21) from three and 85.7 percent (18-for-21) at the line. The Scarlet Raiders ended with a 41-32 edge on the glass and tallied six blocks and four steals as a team.

With the game tied at 47 after a dunk from McDaniel, the Roadrunners went on to score nine-straight points over a span of 4:28 to open a 56-47 lead with 7:27 to play. R-N Head Coach Joe Loughran was forced to call timeout, and the Scarlet Raiders responded by getting baskets from Snow and McDaniel to get within five (56-51) and force a Roadrunner timeout. A defensive stop and a pullup three-pointer from McDaniel brought the crowd to its feet and his team within two, and after a Ramapo bucket, a McDaniel three-point play pulled his team within one (58-57) with 4:30 left in regulation. The Scarlet Raider defense remained strong on the ensuing possession, getting a stop, and Ofray found Snow on the left wing for a huge three-pointer to give Rutgers-Newark a 60-58 lead.

Ramapo scored the next four points in the game to go back on top, and a pair at the line for Ofray tied the game at 62 with 1:42 left. Senior guard Vik Singh tallied a steal on Ramapo's next trip down, and after a timeout to draw up a play, the Scarlet Raiders executed to perfection with McDaniel finding Ofray who drilled a three-pointer from the wing to put his team up three.

The Roadrunners had a chance to tie but could not hit the free throw to complete a three-point play, and Ofray hit 1-of-2 for the Raiders to put them up 66-64 with 20 seconds on the clock. R-N played nearly flawless defense on the final possession of regulation, but a Bonacum put-back with 4.4 seconds on the clock tied things at 66 and ultimately sent the game into overtime.

McDaniel came out scorching and did not cool down at all in the first half, pouring in 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including four three-pointers on five attempts.

The Scarlet Raiders jumped out to a 6-2 lead on the back of a pair of McDaniel triples, and they extended to 11-2 thanks to a dazzling steal and two-handed jam from McDaniel as well.

Two Snow free throws at the halfway point of the first gave Rutgers-Newark its first double-digit lead of the half (22-12), but a 7-0 run from Ramapo quickly trimmed the edge to three with 8:14 left in the first.

Another McDaniel three slowed the Ramapo momentum, and after a stop, Ofray found Singh for a three-pointer from the right wing to make it a 28-19 ball game.

The teams went back-and-forth over the remainder of the period as Ramapo would get as close as four and Rutgers would lead by as many as 10, and the Scarlet Raiders ended up settling on a 41-34 lead at the half.

Like the Scarlet Raiders in the first half, Ramapo came out of the gate strong in the second, scoring the first seven points of the period to tie things at 41.

Ramapo shot 44.3 percent (31-for-70) from the field, 40 percent (6-for-15) from three and 70 percent (7-for-10) at the line. The Roadrunners had 17 assists and just 14 turnovers, racking up nine steals as a team. Bonacum finished with 22 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals, with Nock adding 15 points, five rebound and five assists.

R-N will return to the hardwood Saturday at 3 p.m. when it visits NJAC rival Rowan University. The Scarlet Raiders will be looking for their fourth-straight conference win.
