Williams leads Sewanee past Rhodes, 69-64

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 10, 2016) – A game-high 20 points from Jorden Williams helped the Sewanee men's basketball team extend its home Southern Athletic Association (SAA) winning streak to 11 straight games with a 69-64 victory over rival Rhodes, Sunday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

The Tigers remain atop the league standings with Birmingham-Southern at 3-0. Sewanee is 10-4 overall after winning its past five contests. Rhodes fell to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in SAA action.

Williams finished the game 6-of-11 overall, which included a 6-of-9 effort from beyond the three-point arc. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native now has 201 career threes, which ranks him third all-time behind Turner Emery (260) and Eric Ochel (251).

Along with Williams, fellow starting guard Cody Jones finished with 18 points, three assists, two rebounds, one steal, and one block.

The game was close early as neither team led by more than four points the entire first half. The Tigers took its largest lead with 10:01 left in the opening 20 minutes when Williams hit the second of four straight threes. In fact, from the 11:29 mark until 8:43 left in the first half, Williams scored 12 straight points for Sewanee.

The Tigers led by one, 33-32, at the intermission thanks to a tip-in by senior Seth Brown with five seconds remaining.

In the second half, Sewanee led by as much as 10. With Rhodes down by four, 60-56, with 1:45 to play, junior Clay Born answered with a big three in the corner. After a Sewanee 30-second timeout, Born caught the ball and launch his attempt with less than two seconds remaining on the shot clock.

From there, Sewanee had late free throws by Jones and Jacob McCullough, along with a dunk by Keshonn Carter.

Overall, Sewanee made 50 percent of its attempts which included an unbelievable 61.1 percent of its shots outside.

Along with Jones and Williams, Brown continued his efficient play. The Goodlettsville, Tenn., native finished with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

Daniel Galvin led Rhodes with 16 points while Tyler Gee finished with a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Sewanee will look to keep rolling with a 3:00 p.m. key SAA contest against rival Centre next Saturday.
