Moore Scores 31 as Marlins Win at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Junior Khory Moore scored 31 points Wednesday night as the Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball team defeated Shenandoah University 89-78 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

Moore's point total was the first time a Marlin has topped the 30-point plateau this season and is the most since Moore tallied 41 points in a victory over William Paterson in last year's NCAA Tournament Second Round.

Shenandoah attempted to spring the upset early, taking a 36-36 tie into the haltime break before scoring the first basket of the second half on a layup by Malcolm Clark.

Virginia Wesleyan went on an 11-0 run after Clark's basket to assume a 47-38 edge less than four minutes into the final half. Moore had eight points in the run while Kaelin Poe contributed the final three on a traditional three-point play. The Marlins would lead the rest of the way.

The Hornets cut the deficit to three, 49-46, on a Clark three-point play at 13:41, but the Marlin defense held the hosts scoreless over the next 3:10 to take another big lead, 58-46, as Nick Doyle contributed eight points in the spurt.

Moore had 20 of his 31 points in the second half while Doyle contributed 15 after the break to help Virginia Wesleyan outscore Shenandoah 53-42 in the final half to stay unbeaten in ODAC play.

Clark finished with a game-high 36 points for Shenandoah (3-9/0-3) on 12-of-14 shooting, while also tallying a team-high nine rebounds.

Doyle joined Moore's 31 points with 19 points of his own to go along with five rebounds. Moore added six rebounds and three assists as Poe and Keijon Honore contributed 13 and 10 points respectively.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-4/3-0) returns home for an important ODAC contest with Roanoke College (11-1/3-0) at 2 p.m. The Maroons are the third-highest scoring team in the nation and have won 11 straight. Both teams are receiving votes in this week's D3hoops.com poll.
