Thomas More Opens 2016 With a PAC Win at Thiel

(GREENVILLE, Pa.) – The Thomas More College men's basketball team opened 2016 with a 75-73 win over Thiel College today (Saturday, January 2, 2016) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Beeghly Gymnasium in Greenville, Pennsylvania.

With the win, the Saints improve to 6-5 overall and 3-1 in the PAC.  With the loss, the Tomcats fall to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the PAC.

Thiel jumped out to an early 8-4 lead when Josh Lumbus made a lay-up with 17:17 to play in the first half.  The Saints answered with an 11-4 to take a 15-12 lead with 13:15 to play in the opening half when freshman guard Brandon Horne (Louisville, Ky./Male) made a lay-up.  Thiel used a 13-7 run capped by a Lumbus lay-up with 7:17 to play in the half to take a 25-22 lead.  Thomas More closed out the half on a 17-8 run to build a 39-33 lead at halftime when freshman guard Ryne Callahan (Morehead, Ky./Rowan County) made a three-pointer with 36-seconds to play in the first half.

Thomas More opened the second half on a 21-11 run to extend the lead to 60-44 with 11:08 to play in the game when junior guard Sawyer Pauly (Crescent Springs, Ky./Covington Catholic) made a jumper.  Thiel responded with a 29-14 run to cut the lead to 74-73 with three-seconds to play in the game when Lumbus made a three-pointer.  Sophomore guard Corey Howard (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) made one-of-two free-throws with one-second to play in the game to give the Saints the 75-73 victory.

The Saints were led by junior forward/center Simon Clifford (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual), who scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.  Horne joined in double-figure scoring with 20 points, while Howard just missed double-figures with nine.  Freshman Damion King (Winchester, Ky./George Rogers Clark) led the team in assists with four, while Horne led the team in steals with three.

Thomas More returns to action on Wednesday (January 6) when it travels to Bethany, West Virginia to play Bethany College.  The game is scheduled to tip-off at 8 p.m. inside Hummel Field House.
