SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior guard Kyle Smith scored 16 points, but Zack Yonda led all scorers with 25 points as Swarthmore edged the Earlham College men's basketball team 72-62 in non-conference action on Saturday.

The Quakers trailed 6-0 early on, but used a 10-4 run capped by a layup from freshman Alex Topalovic with 13:59 to play to tie the contest 10-10. Swarthmore (8-0) scored eight of the next ten points to take a six-point advantage. Earlham got within three points on a jumper from Elijah Wilson-Thomas, but the Garnet went on a 9-2 run to end the first half and took a 40-30 advantage into halftime.

Trailing by 11 with 17:01 to play, freshman Cole Bene connected on a shot from long distance and Topalovic followed with two free throws to make the score 45-39. Neither team scored for just over five minutes, but Swarthmore put the game away with a quick 7-0 run.

Smith led the Quakers with 16 points off of the bench in 27 minutes played. Topalovic was the other Quaker to finish in double figures with 11 points. Bene and freshman Isaiah Ware each added nine points.

Yonda led Swarthmore with 25 points. Chris Bourne and Sean Thaxter also finished in double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively.

The Garnet connected on 24 field goals, just one more than the Quakers. Swarthmore's edge, however, came from the free throw line where it hit 20-26 (76.9 percent) free throws. Earlham, on the other hand, connected on 11-13 trips to the charity stripe.

Earlham returns to action against Maine Maritime at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Sunday).
