Tigers Beat Bristol, Win Sixth in a Row

More news about: Occidental

LOS ANGELES — Andrew Johnson scored 26 points and Spencer Levy added 25 as the Occidental men's basketball team cruised past Bristol 80-68 at Rush Gymnasium on Wednesday night for its sixth double-digit victory in a row.

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 6-1 on the season.

Bristol, which has played six NCAA Division I and Division II schools, falls to 0-9. The Bears have played Cal Lutheran, Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps from the SCIAC; their closest defeat was to CMS, 65-63.

From the Coach: "Our defense is inching forward and we are playing very efficient offense when we share the ball and make the extra pass," Oxy head coach Brian Newhall said. "The goal is to be playing our best basketball by the time the SCIAC season starts in January and while we have a distance still to go, we made a little progress tonight."

Both Johnson and Levy were 9 of 14 from the field.

Levy did most of his work from the perimeter or just inside it. He finished 3 of 7 from the 3-point line, including a 27-footer at the end of the shot clock that helped the Tigers jump out to a 39-30 lead at halftime with Johnson spending 9 of those minutes on the bench in foul trouble.

The Tigers went right to Johnson to start the second half and the 6-foot-5 All-SCIAC selection from a year ago got to the foul line and carried Oxy's offense. Johnson, a junior from Los Angeles, finished 8 of 11 from the free throw line and had four rebounds and three assists.

Jeevin Sandhu, a first year from Oakland, made his first start with 6-foot-8 senior big man Andrew Garrison idelined with an injury, scoring eight points with 10 rebounds and a pair of assists in 32 minutes.

Joe Compagno gave Oxy 22 solid minutes off the bench, scoring five points with five assists and three rebounds.

Oxy point guard Kory Hamane chipped in eight points and Jay Miller added six points and five rebounds despite dealing with his own foul trouble.

Tade Keshishyan led Bristol with 17 points and DeVontae Bryant added 11.

The Tigers shot 54 percent from the field, including 59 percent in the second half.

Next Game: The Tigers travel to Portland to play Willamette on Saturday and Pacific (Ore.) on Sunday. Oxy then breaks for the holidays before returning to the court in its SCIAC opener at Redlands on Jan. 2. The Tigers' next home game is against Caltech on Jan. 9.
