Greencastle, Ind. – Four players scored in double figures as the DePauw men's basketball team defeated Oberlin 75-66 for their first North Coast Athletic Conference win on the season while ending a three-game losing streak in the process.
David Vogel paced the way with a career-high 20 points and a career-high nine rebounds. John Starkey and Luke Lattner added 14 points, and Jack VandeMerkt posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
DePauw (3-5, 1-2 NCAC) held a slim 29-28 lead at the half but Vogel, Lattner and VandeMerkt scored 32 of the team's 46 second half points to pull ahead. The Tigers led by as many as 14 and battled back from an eight-point deficit in the first half.
Oberlin (6-4, 2-3 NCAC) was led by Nathan Cohen's 17 points. Eli Silverman-Lloyd scored 14 points off the bench, and Zach Meyers scored 10 points.
DePauw effectively established their post play, outscoring Oberlin 36-20 in points in the paint and by out-rebounding the Yeomen 45-35. They benefited from center Randy Ollie's early exit, as DePauw scored 20 of its 36 points in the pain in the second half.
Ollie, a 6-foot-10-inch 240 lb. senior from Evanston, Ill., fouled out midway through the second half with 11:13 remaining. He was called for his fourth personal foul and then immediately drew the technical foul from voicing his disagreement of the call.
The Tigers led 48-44 before the call and took off shortly after with an 11-3 run that stretched a five-point game to 13 with just over two minutes remaining.
DePauw shot 44 percent (27-of-61) from the floor, 32 percent from three-point range (6-of-19) and 60 percent from the foul line (15-of-25). Oberlin shot 34 percent (22-of-64) for the game, 31 percent from beyond the arc (9-of-29) and 52 percent from the foul line (13-of-25).
Mason Hankins added eight points for the Tigers on 3-of-3 shooting. Clint Cunningham scored seven and Cris Burrough added two points from off the bench to round out the team's scoring.
Adam Botts played in his first game of the season after sitting out the first seven games with an injury. In his nine minutes, he recorded six rebounds.
The Tigers are off for two weeks but will return to action at the Tampa Bay Shootout on Dec. 29.
