BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The University of New England went on a 17-4 run over a six-minute span down the stretch to turn around an eight-point deficit and secure a 72-70 men's basketball victory over Bowdoin College on Tuesday evening (Nov. 24) at Morrell Gymnasium.

Big Blue's first win over the Polar Bears since the 1993-94 season (17 losses) improves the Nor'easters to 4-2 on the year, while Bowdoin slips to 1-2.

In a match that featured 12 lead-changes and eight ties during the initial 28 minutes, Bowdoin used nine unanswered points from Jack Simonds and Lucas Hausman to gain the largest cushion (8) for either side at 63-55 with 8:40 left.

UNE countered with 11 in-a-row to start the deciding shift on the scoreboard and put the visitors up, 66-63. Devin Thompsonhad eight of those points, including his sixth triple of the contest -- with the previous three-pointer moments earlier, Thompson became the 29th player in program history to surpass the 1,000-point milestone for his career.

Hausman evened things at 66-all before pair of freebies by Thompson restored the lead for the Nor'easters. Matt Lettick then converted his only two baskets of the game to extend the gap to 72-67.

Though UNE could not score in the final 2:15, with a missed trey and two turnovers, Bowdoin went 0-for-4 from the field and 3-of-5 at the line during the remainder to come up just short. Hausman was fouled with 1.8 seconds remaining and had a chance to knot the game with a 1-and-1 at the charity stripe, but missed the first attempt. Bowdoin got the offensive board, but a desperation three-pointer by Simonds rimmed out at the buzzer.

Thompson ended with 22 points, with Gavin Dibble adding 16 and CJ Autry tossing in 11. Drew Coveney had team-highs of seven rebounds and five assists for Big Blue, which was +9 from behind the arc (15-of-42) compared to its opponent.

Hausman finished with a game-best 34 points for the Polar Bears, and Simonds tallied 12. Matt Palecki registered a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Nor'easters went up by six (32-26) nearing the end of the 1st half, before a 10-3 rally put the hosts in front by one at the break.

UNE continues it challenging early-season docket with a visit to Bates College on Sunday.
