SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 13, 2015) – The Sewanee men's basketball team opened its first game of the 2015-16 season in midseason form Friday, as the host Tigers rolled past Huntingdon, 93-73, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
Dating back to last season, Sewanee has won 10 straight home games. In fact, the Tigers have not lost on campus since November 25, 2014.
Junior guard Jorden Williams led four Tigers in double figures with 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting. That total tied Williams's career high that he previously set against Hendrix to end the 2014-15 season. His eight threes were a new career high for the Chattanooga, Tenn., native. Williams also moved up the Sewanee career three-point field goal leaders list. He now ranks seventh, just ahead of current assistant coach Bradley Pierson.
Along with Williams, senior Keshonn Carter finished with 14 points and nine rebounds while junior Brody Stone added 14 points, eight boards, and three blocks.
The other Tiger in double digits was freshman Cody Jones, who finished with 10 points in his first game. Fellow guard Clay Born also played well with three points, seven rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
The Tigers wasted little time jumping in front as Williams knocked down his first three with just under a minute off the clock. That sparked a 20-11 run for the Tigers over the first 5:47 to start the game. During that stretch, Williams had 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting.
Unfortunately, Huntingdon answered back with a run of its own. A jumper by Brandon McLean opened a 10-5 run which cut the Tiger lead to two, 25-23.
From there, Sewanee's offense kept rolling. The Tigers closed the half on a 28-14 run. Sewanee finished the first half 20-of-34 (58.8 percent) from the floor. That included eight three-pointers.
Out of the locker room, Sewanee kept the pressure on. The Tigers opened the half on a 17-12 run which extended the lead to 70-47 with 11:29 to play.
After a brief 7-0 spurt by the Hawks, back-to-back jumpers by Stone and Carter stopped any chance of a comeback.
From there, Sewanee did not allow Huntingdon to get to within 15 points.
Raheem Berry paced the Hawks with 16 points. R.J. Jones also played well with 12 points, three rebounds, and two assists.
Sewanee returns to action with a 7:30 p.m. (EST) game at Covenant, Tuesday.
