LOS ANGELES -- Andrew Johnson continued to shine as a budding star, scoring 18 points on 7 of 13 shooting, with five rebounds and a pair of steals.

But Austin Hawk's 3-pointer to win at the buzzer came up short and so did Oxy's bid to ruin Cal Lutheran's SCIAC Championship as the Tigers fell 63-62 at Rush Gymnasium on Tuesday.

The Tigers finish the season 11-14 overall and 7-9 in SCIAC play.

Cal Lutheran wins a share of the SCIAC Championship, finishing the regular season 12-4 and in a three-way tie with Chapman and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

After falling behind by eight points early in the first half, the Tigers switched from man defense to primarily a 1-3-1 zone defense. The new look slowed down the Kingsmen offense and helped the Tigers claw their way back into the game and head into the locker room down 36-31.

In the second half, Cal Lutheran held a small lead until a Johnson tip dunk in transition and a late techinical foul on Cal Lutheran's Connor McGuire, followed by Kory Hamane knocking down both free throws, cut the advantage to 62-60 with 1:19 left.

Coltrane Powdrill was fouled going to the basket for Cal Lutheran on the other end, but made just one of two free throws.

The Tigers were able to counter, taking advantage of a bad foul. Trailing by three points, Juwan Ricewas bumped by Arik Smith, away from the basket, and cashed in with two makes with the Kingsmen in the double bonus, cutting the lead to one with 31 seconds left.

The Tigers denied the ensuing inbounds play and nearly forced a turnover in the back court before Cal Lu head coach Rich Rider called a timeout.

Oxy pressured until the 13-second mark, finally fouling to send Smith to the free throw line.

Smith missed the front end of the one-and-one and Johnson snagged the rebound. Hawk found Johnson in the post at the other end, but Johnson quickly attracted the double team and kicked it back out to Hawk, who missed a decent look just before time expired.

Had they won, the Tigers would have completed the season sweep of the Kingsmen. In Game 1 in Thousand Oaks, Oxy's lone senior Juwan Rice hit a buzzer beater for the win.

From the Coach: "Despite turning the ball over 19 times, many of them unforced, we still had a shot to win," Oxy head coach Brian Newhall said. "I was happy with the way our guys competed and stayed in the game. We just didn't make enough plays to come out on top against a very good team."

Oxy returns everyone from its 2014-15 team besides Rice, who finished with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Rice, one of Occidental's best students, will graduate with a 3.9 grade point average and is planning to attend UCLA Dental School next fall on a full scholarship.

"We couldn't be happier of the student-athlete and person Juwan has become," Newhall said. "He was our leader and we will miss him, but we're excited for him as he moves on the the next chapter of his life with so much going for him."

Kory Hamane had his second good shooting night in a row, going 2 of 5 from deep for 10 points. Against Caltech on Feb. 21, Hamane hit five threes and scored 16 points.

Andrew Garrison had eight points and seven rebounds and JJ Friedman provided an offensive spark in the first half with eight points.

Smith, a candidate for SCIAC Player of the Year, finished with 23 points and six rebounds.
