RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team scored a
109-101 victory over Gwynedd Mercy tonight at Nerney Field House in
a Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal.
The Cavaliers' eighth consecutive victory improves the team to
17-9 and secures the team's seventh straight appearance in the CSAC
championship game and a chance to win its sixth consecutive
conference title.
The Blue and White will host Neumann University on Friday night at
7 p.m. in the championship tilt.
Senior Aaron Walton-Moss stepped into the record book with
tonight's win. Not only did the senior record his ninth
triple-double of the season with 18 points, 13 rebounds and 13
assists, his final two points broke Billy Carr's career scoring
record of 1,604 points. The senior also swiped a career high
seven steals.
Walton-Moss was one of five Cavaliers to record double figures in
tonight's win. Freshman Jair Green matched a career high with 25
points, while junior Ace Henry was on fire, posting a career best
23 points in just 20 minutes off the bench. The junior hit 8-for-10
from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3-point range.
Senior Vinny Walls tallied 20 points and seven rebounds, while
sophomore Ronny Paden added 11 points. The Cavaliers also got a
boost from sophomore Ryan Charity, who posted eight points, five
rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
Cabrini's 109 points marked the club's largest scoring output
since a 111-99 victory over Widener on Nov. 30, 2013. The
team's 24 assists also tied a season high.
The Griffins used an early 9-0 lead to take an early 13-4
advantage. Trailing 29-24 at the 9:23 mark, a Henry triple
spurred the Cavaliers to a 10-0 run, giving the Blue and White a
five point lead.
Gwynedd Mercy battled back to even the score at 47-47 late in the
stanza, but Green hit a pair of jumpers to send Cabrini into the
half with a 51-47 lead.
The Cavaliers opened the second half with five consecutive points,
extending its lead to 56-47. Henry connected on another three
pointer on Cabrini's next possession, pushing the lead to 10
points.
Minutes later, a 6-0 Blue and White spurt pushed the lead to 65-51
with 16 minutes to play.
The Griffins whittled away at its deficit, coming within 92-88
with 3:51 left on the clock, but the Cavaliers had an answer,
connecting on 9-12 from the free throw line in the final minutes.
Henry also connected on what could have been the two biggest shots
of the night. Walton-Moss found the junior for a pair of
three pointers in the final 2:08, both of which extended the Blue
and White's cushion to eight points.
While both teams shot over 54% from the field in the opening half,
Cabrini turned up the defense after the break. The Cavaliers
held Gwynedd Mercy to just 35.6% second half shooting, including
5-16 from the free throw line.
Conversely, the Blue and White connected on 17-34 from the field
and 21-26 from the charity stripe in the second half.
Five Griffins (17-10) scored in double figures, led by senior
Justin Knight and junior Brian Hennessy with 22 points each.
Knight added 11 points and six assists, while Hennessey hit 6-12
from three point range. Junior Darnell Artis added 21 points
and six assists in the loss.
Neumann (16-10), the tournament's second seed, advanced to
Friday's CSAC championship game after tonight's 57-52 semifinal win
over Centenary.
The Cavaliers scored a pair of wins over the Knights in their two
meetings this year. Walls hit 7-10 from three point range to
lead the Blue and White to an 81-60 home win on Dec. 3.
Walton-Moss paired 18 points and 11 boards in Cabrini's 80-71 road
win.
The game will also mark a rematch of the 2014 CSAC title
game. Walls tallied 31 points, while Walton-Moss paired 26
points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, as Cabrini topped Neumann
96-79.
