Hornets Survive Double Overtime Thriller with Roanoke

SALEM, VA – Junior Austen Arnold and sophomore Zack Burnett had career nights as the Lynchburg College men's basketball team survived two extra periods to down Roanoke College 103-101 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Wednesday night.

It was the second-highest combined scoring output in the ODAC this season and the second time Roanoke has surrendered more than 100 points in a contest this year.

Arnold topped the 30-point plateau for the first time in his career with his 33 point showing. Burnett matched a career high with 27 points to go along with a career best nine rebounds.

Regulation went back and forth with Roanoke assuming an 83-79 lead on an Andrew Daniels three-pointer with 1:50 remaining. Lynchburg ran down the shot clock on its next possession, looking for the perfect shot. Burnett was able to get open for the Hornets and knock down a trifecta to cut the gap back to one with 1:20 left to play.

The Hornets forced a turnover on Roanoke's next possession, but missed a pair of jumpers to take the lead.  Daniel Eacho grabbed the rebound following the second miss and found Daniels who was fouled and sent to the charity stripe with 23 seconds remaining.

The free throw attempt caromed off the rim where Omar Kemp grabbed the board and was fouled immediately. He connected on one of his two tries to tie the game back up at 83-all.

Lynchburg got the ball back but a last second jumper missed the mark to send the contest to overtime.

The Hornets maintained the lead for all but 28 seconds of the overtime session when Seth Bradley scored to give the Maroons a 92-91 lead with just over a minute to play. Arnold tied the game back up on a free throw with 48 seconds to go to set up the final extra session.

Roanoke led 99-98 with a minute left when Arnold drew Eacho's, Roanoke's leading scorer, fifth foul with 44 seconds to play. He knocked down both attempts to put LC up one.

The Maroons got a chance at the line but missed both attempts. Bradley won the ball back for Roanoke on a hustle play, sending the ball to teammate Carter Wright. The Maroon was fouled and converted on both free throws to put Roanoke ahead one again 101-100 with 27 seconds left.

Lynchburg set up a play for its leader on the night and Arnold connected with 14 seconds left. Following a turnover with seven seconds to play, Arnold connected on one of two free throws for the 103-101 advantage. Roanoke was not able to get off a last-second attempt.

Alex Graves joined Arnold and Burnett in double-figures with 12 points while corralling nine boards as Daniel Rowe contributed 11 points.

Eacho led Roanoke (7-11/2-7 ODAC) with a game-high 35 points and 10 rebounds while Daniels contributed 21 points and Bradley added 16.

Lynchburg (11-7/4-5) returns home to face ODAC leader and No. 8-ranked Randolph-Macon College (16-2/9-0) Saturday at 2 p.m.
