Balanced scoring continues to pace Spartans

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – It's been a recurring theme in recent weeks for Manchester University. A 92-87 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Earlham College proved no different Saturday, Jan. 24.

The Spartans, winning their third straight, put five players in double figures, marking the sixth successive game in which three-or-more team members have tallied 10-or-more points. Junior forward Matt Brown (Hobart, Ind.) continued a strong skein, too, registering his eighth consecutive double-digit outing with 29 points on seven-of-13 overall and four-of-eight three-point field goal shooting.

Brown's numbers weren't the only keys to a sizzling 50.9 percent overall and 40 percent three-point field goal afternoon. Junior guard Brady Dolezal (Tipton, Ind.) contributed 16 points, while the underclassman guard duo of sophomore Chase Casteel (Monrovia, Ind.) and Brody Kirby (Frankfort, Ind.) added 15 points apiece, and sophomore guard Blake Brouwer (Elkhart, Ind.) chipped in 11 points. Free throw shooting was also of high importance in the win, as the Black and Gold hit 22-of-27 attempts, led by Brown's sparkling 11-of-11 total.

MU (5-12 overall, 4-6 HCAC) had to overcome a pesky Quakers' crew. EC, despite dropping to 0-17 overall and 0-10 in the league, had just as torrid an offensive touch as their hosts, hitting better than 50 percent overall and from outside the arc inside Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. The Spartans scored 12 of the game's first 16 points and got the lead out as much as 12 over 40 minutes, but Earlham managed to tie it twice and closed to as close as one on several occasions.

The Spartans resume the 2014-15 season Wednesday, Jan. 28. They travel to Franklin College's Spurlock Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

NOTES: Manchester University's 92 points were the program's most in a game since the 2012-13 squad posted 95 in a win over Kalamazoo … Casteel's sixth consecutive double-digit game moved his points per game average to a season-best 7.9 … Brown's current eight-game double-digit scoring run is further spotlighted by the fact that he's totaled 20-or-more points four times in the span … MU's three-game win streak, helping them stay just a game out of the league's top six, is the program's longest since the 2010-11 team reeled off 12 in a row.
