ANGOLA, Ind.-- A late first half run and a strong performance from the free throw line sparked Trine to a 69-55 victory over Alma in MIAA-action Saturday afternoon at Hershey Hall.

A 10-2 run to close the first half gave the Thunder a double-digit lead that would not shrink to single-digits the rest of the afternoon. Tyler Good (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen) scored a season-high 29 points on an 8-of-16 performance from the field. Good was routinely able to beat Alma's zone defense and took advantage of his free throw attempts, hitting all 12 of his charity shots. Trine hit 24-of-25 (96 percent) from the free throw line, a team-best mark since joining Division III in 2004. Scott Nikodemski scored 20 points and dished out four assists to pace the Scots. The Thunder improved to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA. Alma saw a two-game conference win-streak snapped, falling to 4-11 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Jared Holmquist (Reed City, Mich./Reed City) scored 16 points on a 7-of-11 performance from the floor for Trine. Will Dixon (Indianapolis, Ind./Zionsville) added 16 points and hit all eight of his free throw attempts. The Thunder held Alma to 15 points below their season scoring average. The Scots entered the contest 26th in the nation in made threes per game, but were held to just a 3-of-17 (18 percent) performance from long-distance.

DJ Beckman notched 14 points and eight rebounds for Alma. Beckman and Nikodemski combined to shoot 13-of-24 from the floor (54 percent), but the rest of the team was only able to muster a 10-of-26 effort (38 percent). The Scots held a 36-22 scoring advantage in the paint.

After a Beckman three cut the Trine lead to four late in the first half, the Thunder outscored the Scots 10-2 over the final 4:47 to take a 41-29 lead into the break. Four different players scored during the run. Good scored 17 of his points before the half, knocking down 6-of-9 from the field. Holmquist added 14 of his points in the first half. The Thunder shot 59 percent (17-of-29) from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

Good later scored eight-straight Thunder points as Trine went on an 8-2 run to push the score to 55-39 with 11:14 to play. Good knocked down a three and converted an old-fashioned three-point play during the run. The Thunder never led by fewer than 10 points after halftime.

Trine's performance from the free throw line provided a big key in closing out the Scots in the second half. The Thunder hit all 17 of their free throw attempts in the game's final 20 minutes.

Trine returns to action this Wednesday, Jan. 21 when they host Calvin at 5:30 p.m. in Hershey Hall. The Knights enter the game as the lone unbeaten in conference play.
