Owens and Griffith Net 18 Each as Bloodhounds Fall to Hawks

The men's basketball team tied the game late but fell to the Hunter Hawks, 69-60, on Friday afternoon at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Bloodhounds fall to 2-10 on the season and 1-4 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Hawks improve to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in CUNYAC. 

Hunter took an early 5-2 lead but consecutive three-pointers by senior Kris Owens gave John Jay its first lead. The Hawks then took a two-point lead and with 13:55 left in the half, senior Korede Griffith tied the game on a lay-up. The guests then took two-two point leads but field goals by juniors Calvin Ingram and Kendal Jordan tied the game. 

With 6:51 remaining in the first half and the Bloodhounds trailing by one, Hunter ended the half on a 10-3 run to lead 29-21. Owens led John Jay with 10 points and Griffith had four steals and three rebounds. The Bloodhounds went 8-for-25 (32%) from the field while the Hawks went 13-for-38 (34.2%). 

Two minutes into the second half, Hunter led 33-24. Two consecutive lay-ups by Griffith cut the lead to five. However, the Hawks increased the lead back up to eight with 12:58 left in the contest. 

Owens then drained two shots from behind the arc to cut the deficit to 40-38. The next three minutes consisted of both teams exchanging buckets. With 4:58 remaining, Hunter led 53-46. 

Senior Darell Robinson made a lay-up and followed that up by sinking a three to cut the lead to 53-51 with 3:41 left on the clock. One minute later, sophomore Ronald Merriwether stole the ball off an inbounded pass and made a lay-up to tie the game. 

The Hawks then hit consecutive three's to give them a 61-55 with 0:41 remaining. Hunter would go on to take the game and pick up their second conference win of the season. 

Owens finished with 18 points, a team-high six rebounds, and four steals. Griffith recorded 18 points, five rebounds, and a game-high seven steals. Robinson added seven points and dished out a team-high three assists. Merriwether registered eight points, five rebounds, and three steals. 

The Bloodhounds travel to Baruch College on Tuesday, January 6, for a conference game at 7:30pm.
