No. 24 Marietta sails by Mass. Dartmouth 83-63

MIAMI, Fla. — The No. 24-ranked Marietta College men's basketball team closed out 2014 with a convincing 83-63 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Wednesday (Dec. 31) afternoon in the Adidas Holiday Slam hosted by the Florida Christian School.

The Pioneers, 12-0 overall, will try to equal the 2010-11 team's best start in program history when Marietta travels to Ohio Northern University for a 3:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, January 10th. MC currently sits atop the Ohio Athletic Conference standings with a 5-0 league record.

Mass. Dartmouth (5-6 overall) scored the first five points of the game but it was all Marietta after that. The Pioneers went on a 33-9 run over the next 10 minutes to take a19-point lead, 33-14. Marietta shot a sizzling 56.3% and committed only one turnover in the first half to lead 51-30 at the break.

Marietta pushed the lead to 23 points, 53-30, with the first basket of the second period. The Corsairs managed to get within 15 points, 78-63, with 1:45 left in the game on an old fashioned three-point play from Jake Laga.

Sophomore Keith Richardson was the lone Pioneer to reach double figures with 15 points. However, 13 different Pioneers scored in the game with Luis Garcia, Garrett Stephenson, Andy Stegman and A.J. Ireland each notching nine points. Junior Eddy Grenert grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Cody Borges scored 18 points to lead Mass. Dartmouth. Jordan Rezendes added 17, while Wale Abraham and Laga each scored 12 points. Abraham pulled down 11 rebounds.

For the game, Marietta shot 44.1% (30-of-68) from the floor, 20.8% (5-of-24) from three-point range and 72.0% (18-of-25) at the free throw line. The Corsairs were 24-of-66 (36.4%) from the floor, 5-of-16 (31.3%) behind the arc and 10-of-11 (90.9%) at the line.

Mass. Dartmouth outrebounded the Pioneers 42-20. Marietta forced 14 Corsair turnovers, while committing just eight.
