Hornets Start Winter Break with Big 69-62 Victory over Marymount

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's basketball team picked up a big home win on Tuesday afternoon, downing Marymount (Va.) University 69-62 in non-conference action.

Tuesday's game kicked off a tough stretch for the Hornets as LC's next three opponents (Marymount, Penn State Mont Alto, Richard Stockton) entered the day a combined 24-2. Lynchburg is now 3-1 on the year against teams in the top 25 or receiving votes.

Lynchburg fell behind early in the contest as Marymount assumed a 7-2 lead three minutes in on a layup by Alex Danko and five-point spurt by Antonio Rouse.

The Hornets erased the deficit quickly as Daniel Rowe connected on back-to-back three-pointers the grab the lead for LC with 15:07 remaining in the first.

Zack Burnett followed Rowe by scoring eight of the game's next 10 points to put Lynchburg up 16-9, the largest lead in the first half for the Hornets.

Marymount managed to pound the ball into the paint and cut into the deficit, taking the lead back with 7:49 remaining when JC Hoellich was fouled on a successful dunk to tie it before draining the free throw.

Burnett added four more points down the stretch in the first half to send Lynchburg to the halftime break with a 34-29 advantage.

Both teams started the second half with sloppy plays and turnovers before Lynchburg ultimately took advantage for the first score of the stanza on a three by AJ Hamilton nearly two minutes in.

A balanced attack by the Saints cut the lead back to two points, 38-36 with 15 minutes left in regulation, but the Hornets scored the next eight to pull ahead by 10 once more. Marymount would get no closer than five the rest of the way.

Both of the teams had a chance to win it at the free throw line, attempting more than 20 each in the second half, but combined for a 27-46 day from the charity stripe.

Burnett led the Hornets with 19 points and six boards while Rowe added 11 points and seven caroms. Alex Graves finished the day with 12 points.

Jesse Konadu and Dmitri Rucker led Marymount (7-1) with 11 points each while Hoellich finished with nine points and 11 boards.

Lynchburg (7-1) will be off until New Year's Day when the Hornets travel to Penn State Mont Alto (7-2) for a 3 p.m. start.
