(Salisbury, Md.) – The #14-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team made a late surge to take control of the game as they captured the 2014 Optimist Tip-Off Tournament at Salisbury University on Sunday. The Red Devils broke away late to post an 87-70 win to improve to 2-0.

A dunk from senior Chris Cox, followed by a three-pointer from Brandon Angradi triggered a 10-2 run for the Devils.

First-year Jon Stenger capped the run with a three-point play to put Dickinson up, 18-10, with 12 minutes remaining in the half.

The Seagulls cut the margin to three before senior Steve Collins hit a lay-up and then a three-pointer to put the Devils back in front by eight. Salisbury made another run, late in the half to pull within one, but junior Ted Hinnenkamp scored a pair a field-goals around a basket from Gerry Wixted to give the Devils a 37-30 lead at halftime.

After the break Dickinson stretched the lead to double-figures in the opening two minutes of the second half. They would hold that double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, except for once at the midpoint of the half. The Devils went on an 11-3 run from that point to stretch the margin to 60-43, at the 12 minute mark.

Dickinson would lead by as many as 21 points in the second half. Salisbury started to pick up on the offensive end but were unable to contain the Red Devils on the other end of the floor to make up any ground.

Another balanced attack saw five players reach double-figures for the Red Devils. Angradi earned Tournament MVP honors with a game-high 22 points, sinking five three-pointers on the afternoon.

Wixted finished with a double-double to earn All-Tournament team recognition. He scored 12 points to go with 11 rebounds, a game-high five assists and a pair of blocked shots. Hinnenkamp tallied 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting, adding six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

First-year Justus Melton chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds, hitting 5-of-7 shots while Collins went 4-for-5 from the field to reach double-figures with 10.

Gordon Jeter led Salisbury (1-1) with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 10-for-12 from the floor.

The Red Devils improve to 2-0 on the year. They travel to Haverford College next Saturday for the Centennial Conference opener at 2:00 pm.
