North Central Men Get Back on Track with Rout of Penn State York

One night after seeing its season-opening six-game winning streak snapped, the North Central College men's basketball team bounced back quickly on Saturday, rolling to a large first-half lead and cruising to an 87-67 victory over Penn State York in the consolation game of the Juniata College Comfort Inn Doc Greene Tournament.

The Cardinals (7-1) established a new season high in scoring and saw 13 of the players who took the floor reach the scoring column. After racing to a 53-30 lead at halftime, North Central was able to turn to its bench for much of the second period.

After playing to a 6-6 standstill in the first four minutes, the Cardinals got two straight three-pointers from Jayme Moten to ignite an 13-2 run. York's Jud Gemmill knocked down a three-pointer with 12:13 on the clock, but North Central responded with a three-pointer from Kevin Honn and a three-point play by Charles Rosenberg. A pair of free throws by Joe Kennellpushed the Cardinals' lead to 27-11 with 10:09 to play in the opening period.

North Central was held scoreless for the next two minutes but yielded just one basket in that time. Kennell drove the lane for a layup, Moten scored inside twice and Rosenberg added another three-point play to push the lead 36-13. The Cardinals led by at least 17 points the rest of the half and went into the break up by 23. 

The lead grew as large as 31 points early in the second period. Trailing, 70-43, York was able to put together a 13-0 run as the Cardinals were held scoreless for more than five minutes. An inside basket by Mike Reinke broke the ice for North Central and set the Cardinals on a 10-2 run that was capped by a Brandon White layup with 3:50 play and built the lead back up to 22 points at 80-58. North Central  led by at least 19 points the rest of the way.

Moten led the Cardinals with 21 points and five assists, while Rosenberg totaled 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting before fouling out with 10:52 to play. Evan Fendley scored a season-high 11 points and Honn and Jack Burchett shared the team lead in rebounds with six each.

The Cardinals travel to face crosstown rival Benedictine University on Wednesday for the annual Battle for the Chicago/Maple Avenue Trophy. Tipoff at the Rice Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
