MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Dec. 6, 2014) – A game-high 25 points by guard Alex Layson lifted host Huntingdon to a 72-64 win over the Sewanee men's basketball team, Saturday.

Layson finished 5-of-7 from the field, which included a 3-for-4 effort from beyond the three-point arc. That allowed the Hawks to earn their first win this season while the Tigers dropped to 2-3.

Despite shooting only 31.2 percent from the floor the first half, Sewanee started strong. A jumper by Brody Stone, with just over three minutes off the clock, gave the Tigers a 7-6 lead. After another made shot from Stone, and good jumpers by Jorden Williams and Keshonn Carter, Sewanee had its largest lead of the contest at 13-8.

The Tigers would stay in front until the 9:41 mark. That is when a layup by Dantavius Washington and a jumper by Jerome Davis pushed Huntingdon in front at 17-15.

The Tigers would tie the contest at 17-17 when Marcellus Caldwell hit a layup. Unfortunately, Huntingdon answered back with a 7-2 run.

Eventually, the Hawks' lead grew by as much as 15, 40-25, after a pair of Washington free throws midway through the second half.

With 1:25 remaining Sewanee would try to comeback when Williams made a layup to cut the Tiger deficit to eight, 63-55. Sewanee would then pull to within six, 66-60, after an old fashion three-point play by Williams.

Each team then traded scores before freshman Jacob McCullough hit a three to cut the Huntingdon lead to five, 69-64, with 15 seconds left.

However, free throws by Layson and Washington sealed the win for the Hawks.

Overall, Sewanee struggled from the field making 36.9 percent of its attempts. That included only four made three-point attempts.

Sewanee did manage to outrebound Huntingdon, 45-29.

Individually, Williams led three Tigers in double figures with 18 points. Carter added a 15-point, 14-rebound double-double while Caldwell pitched in 10 points.

Sewanee returns to action with its final home game of the semester Tuesday against regional-rival Covenant. That contest is scheduled to tipoff at 7:00 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
