Men’s Hoops Falls in Skyline Opener to Mount St. Mary, 58-49

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Skyline Conference play opened up throughout the league on Tuesday night, with Maritime drawing a matchup against the Mount St. Mary Knights to start off conference play. In the end, it was the Knights coming out with a 58-49 victory, despite Maritime being within one possession with just nine minutes left in regulation.
 
Maritime's was led by freshman John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) as the rookie guard collected 12 points off the bench. Senior T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) was the only other player to score double-figures as he recorded 11 and also had a pair of assists and pulled down five boards.
 
Senior Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) led the team with eight rebounds, and also contributed with seven points on the night. Sophomore Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) added six rebounds and eight points, while classmate Darien Bryan (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) had five points. Freshman Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) added four, while sophomore Liam Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols) rounded out the scoring with a bucket.
 
After an incredibly cold start by both teams off of the Thanksgiving break, the first points of the game were put in by Gibson on a layup with 17:37 to go in the opening period. The Privateers added to their lead with a Corley three-point basket just 23 seconds later. Mount St. Mary pulled to within one, but MacDonald collected his first basket of the evening to put Maritime up by a 7-4 score with 15:20 to go.
 
Mount St. Mary took its first lead of the night with a layup with just over six minutes gone by, but Liccese responded by drilling a three-pointer from downtown to give the Privateers the lead once again. The Knights tied the game at 10 and through the remainder of the opening period; neither side was able to take larger than a four-point lead as Mount St. Mary went into the locker room with a 25-23 lead.
 
After halftime, the lead exchanged hands several more times as neither side was able to get a defensive stop as the teams exchanged two-point baskets. Mount St. Mary took a 35-32 lead with 11:26 to go in the game, but Gibson answered with a three-pointer to tie the game once again. Overall on the night, the game was tied on five different occasions with lead changing hand 13 different times.
 
Liccese then sank the second of two from the free throw line with 9:01 left in regulation to pull Maritime back within two at 40-38. Mount St. Mary followed by rolling out a 12-2 run, and opened up the largest lead of the matchup with a 52-40 advantage.
 
Bryan hit a layup, followed by Ryan picking up a layup with under three minutes remaining to put Maritime within eight points at 52-44. Maritime got within seven as Liccese knocked down a layup with 46 seconds to go and make the score 54-47, however it was too much to overcome as Mount St. Mary hung on for the 58-49 victory.

For the teams rebounds were even as both sides had 34 each; Maritime also had 13 turnovers while Mount St. Mary gave the ball away 12 times. In terms of shooting, the Knights sank 45.3% from the floor, while the Privateers made 38.9% of their shots.
 
Maritime (2-4, 0-1 Skyline) will finish off the home portion of the fall schedule this Thursday when the team plays host to the Brooklyn Bulldogs at 7 p.m. from Riesenberg Hall Gym. Live Stats and Live Webstream of the game will be available at MaritimeAthletics.com.
