Myers' Big Night Not Enough as Spartans Fall to LVC

YORK, PA – The Lebanon Valley Flying Dutchmen rode deadly long range shooting in a big first half to outlast the York College men's basketball squad 93-83 in the consolation game of the 15th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Sunday in York.

The Spartans fall to 0-2 while the Flying Dutchmen improve to 1-1.

LVC got off to a tremendous start as they outscored York 26-8 over the first six and a half minutes of the game. They hit four three pointers in the opening stretch as they appeared poised to blow the Spartans out.

York cut the lead to 13 on a Mike Duffy (Hanover, Pa./South Western) triple with 10:05 left in the half. LVC responded with a 12-4 run to push their advantage to 21 at 43-22.

The Dutchmen would push the lead to as many as 23 before they settled for a 56-35 lead at the break.

LVC quickly pushed their lead to a game-high 25 just a minute and a half into the second half. The Spartans battled back with a sustained 21-7 run, cutting the visitor lead to 11 at 67-56. LVC answered with a quick five-point spurt to push their lead back to 16. The Flying Dutchmen lead vacillated between 12 and 18 points over the next eight minutes. The Spartans outscored LVC 9-2 over the final 1:21 of the game to pull to within ten at the final horn.

Sophomore Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) had a career day for the Green and White as he poured in a game-high 34 points including 26 in the second half. Myers, who earned All-Tournament team honors, was 14-for-22 from the floor, 1-for-4 from three, and 5-for-5 from the stripe. Myers also had six rebounds, an assist, a blocked shot and two steals in 36 minutes of play.

Sophomore Brad Wesner (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) added 13 points, three rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal in 32 minutes of action. Duffy was the third Spartan in double figures as he added 11 points. Sophomore Blake Straitman (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) added a game-high tying nine rebounds, six points and two blocked shots.

Senior Kevin Agnew led LVC as he tallied 32 points and four assists. Agnew, who went over 1,000 career points in the first half, was 11-for-20 from the floor including 6-for-10 from three and 4-for-7 from the line. Freshman Andy Orr added 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in 32 minutes of work. Travis Conrad contributed 15 points while Luke Berguson was the fourth player in double figures with 12 points.

The Flying Dutchmen finished the game shooting 57.4% after shooting 66.7% in the first half. LVC canned 12-of-20 from three (60%) while they made 11-of-19 (57.9%) from the free throw line.

York shot 43.2% from the floor, 41.2% from three, and 80% from the free throw line.

LVC held a 38-36 edge on the glass while York held a 21-12 margin in second chance points. Both teams got 15 points off turnovers and both teams got 40 points in the paint.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they head to Gettysburg to face the Bullets in their annual non-conference contest. Tip time from Bream Gymnasium is set for 8:00 pm.
