CMU Edges Colorado College On Last-Second Layup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A layup by Julian Vasquez with four seconds remaining gave Colorado Mesa University a 71-70 victory over Colorado College on Friday night at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs' Gallogy Events Center.

Vasquez scored seven seconds after junior guard Justin Berardino knocked down a jump shot to put the Tigers ahead, 70-69.

CC led 68-62 after senior center Chris Lesnansky completed a three-point play with 2:29 remaining, but Ryan Stephan scored four of his team-high 22 points during a 7-0 run that gave the Division II Mavericks a one-point lead with 20 seconds to play.  

Lesnansky led the Tigers with 22 points. He also grabbed four rebounds, recorded three assists and posted a game-high three blocked shots.

Junior guard Luke Winfield scored 14 points and dished out five assists. Berardino finished with 11 points, three assists and a pair of steals for Colorado College, which slipped to 2-1.

CC took its biggest lead at 64-57 when Lesnansky connected from behind the arc with 5:46 to play.

Colorado Mesa raced to an early 9-2 advantage, its largest of the game, but the Tigers used a 23-12 spurt to build a four-point edge with 7:06 remaining in the first half.  

Stephan, a 6-foot-10 junior center, paced the Mavericks with 22 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Joe Kiely added 12 points, while senior guard Michael Melillo dished out eight assists for the Mavericks, who improved to 2-1.

The Tigers face cross-town-rival UCCS on Saturday night for the first time since Nov. 20, 2009.
