Privateers Drop Close Matchup to St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) to Close Out Admiral’s Classic

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Men's Basketball team fell in a close contest to the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears by the score of 67-58 on Sunday afternoon in the final matchup of the 2014 Admiral's Classic at Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
 
Leading the team in scoring was senior T'Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy), who had a big second half with 10 points as he finished the contest with a total of 13. Three other players reached double-figures in points as senior Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) had 11 points, as did rookie John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman). Sophomore Isaiah Hayes (Jamaica, N.Y./Queens Teaching) had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Maritime took its first lead of the game as sophomore Brendon Halligan (Durham, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) drilled a three-pointer with 16:35 left in the opening half to put the Privateers up by a 5-4 score. On the next offensive possession, Gibson nailed a three-pointer of his own followed by a layup from Corley as the Privateers took a four-point advantage.
 
The Privateers worked up their lead to 13 points on two occasions in the opening half, with the second coming on a jumper from Halligan with 4:15 left in the period. The Bears closed out the half on a 7-1 run, as the Privateers took a seven point lead into the halftime break.
 
The lead shrunk down to one with 17:21 left in the second period. Eventually the Bears took a one-point lead on its next possession, and built up a lead of their own as St. Joseph's led by a 56-48 margin.
 
Maritime refused to quit and began to claw its way back into contention as Corley sank a layup, after a turnover, the Privateers got the ball back and Gibson stepped back for a three-pointer to trim the deficit to three points. Hayes then cut the lead to one as he sank a layup before the Privateers pulled down a defensive rebound on the next Bear possession.
 
Once again Gibson drilled another key three-point basket as he gave Maritime a 58-56 lead with just 3:24 left in regulation.
 
However, St. Joseph's closed out the contest on an 11-0 run, including seven straight free throws to seal the victory.
 
Maritime got key contributions from the bench as the team had 28 bench points to St. Joseph's three. The Bears had an 8-4 advantage in fast break points, while points in the paint were 34-20 in favor of the Bears.
 
Earlier in the day, the Hunter Hawks exited the Admiral's Classic with its second victory as the team knocked off Merchant Marine in the opener of day two.
 
Maritime (0-2) will next host Merchant Marine on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) (2-0) will also play on Wednesday, as the team opens up league action with a trip to take on Pratt at 8 p.m.
