No. 20 Comets Run Past UT Tyler 103-83 To Reach ASC Championship Game

RICHARDSON, TX (03.01.14) - The No. 20 UT Dallas men's basketball is headied to the title game of the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the first time since 2010 after a 103-83 romp of rival Texas-Tyler Saturday afternoon at the UTD Activity Center in the second of two semifinal games.

The top-seeded Comets (now 24-3) will play No. 2 seed Hardin-Simmons (19-8) Sunday at 2 p.m. for the ASC's automatic berth into NCAA Division III National Tournament. HSU advanced to the title game with a 93-83 win over Louisiana College in Saturday's first semifinal.

Senior forward Kyle Schleigh scored a career-high 38 points, leading five Comets in double figures, as UTD nearly led the No. 5-seeded Patriots wire-to-wire advance to the program's fourth-ever ASC title game. Schleigh's 38 points tied the record for the most points ever in an ASC semifinal contest and fell two points shy of the Comets single-game mark.

The Patriots scored the first two points of the contest and led by as many as five points early on two occasions before UTD gained control of the game. The Comets hit their first five three-pointers of the afternoon and used a 13-0 run to turn a five-point deficit into an eight-point lead, 21-13, with 13:09 left in the opening half. UTD grabbed its first double-digit lead of the game at the 11:43 mark when Matthew Medell's layup lift the Comets to a 25-15 cushion. The Comets widened the margin to as many as 20 points in the half before setting for  a 54-38 lead at the break.

UTD shot 52.9 percent (18-of-34) over the first 20 minutes and was 7-of-15 (46.7%) from three-point range. The Comets were 10-for-10 from the line in the opening period.

UT-Tyler clawed within 13 points on several occasions in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, however the Comets continued its success at the line, going 10-for-12 from the stripe in the final period. UTD hit its first 17 free throws of the game.

The Comets regained a 20-point advantage with 8:49 remaining when a Medell break-away layup lifted UTD to an 82-61 advantage. A a slow stretch were UTD scored just five points over the next minutes and allowing the Patriots to close within 12 points, 88-76 with 4:30 left, the Comets finished strong. UTD was 5-for-6 from the field over the final four minutes to ice the win.

Schleigh ended the game 14-of-20 from the field, hitting 5-of-8 three-pointers, and was 5-for-5 from the foul line. He added a game-high eight rebounds along with three steals and a pair of assists. Medell and Nolan Harvey each had 16 points, Dmitriy Chernikov finished with 15 points and Carter Nash came off the bench for 11 points. Harvey and Nash both collected 10 assists for "double-double" performances.

The Comets topped the century mark for the first time this season and set a season high for field goals made (36). UTD shot 56.3 percent (36-of-64) from the field for the game, while hitting 10-of-23 three-pointers (43.5%) and were 21-of-23 (91.3%) from the line. The Comets out-rebounded UTT, 33-27.

For the Patriots (15-12), Jordan Cannon had a team-high 25 points to lead five UTT players in double figures. Bryce Kemp had 15 points, Travis Dykman had 14 points, Chris Rios finished with 12 points and Nathan Harbour added 11 points. Cannon led UTT with six rebounds while Kemp dished out a team-high five assists. The Patriots shot 50.9% from the field (28-of-55), hitting 10-of-24 three-pointers (41.7%), and were 17-of-22 (77.3%) from the free-throw line.
