Geneseo Deals Oneonta 68-63 Setback

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior forward Gordon Lyons totaled 26 points and 13 rebounds for his 15th double-double of the season to lead the Knights past Oneonta, 68-62, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's basketball action, Friday.

Geneseo (19-5, 13-4 SUNYAC) are locked into the third seed for the upcoming SUNYACTournament, based on Plattsburgh's 87-63 victory over Buffalo State in the night's other action. The Knights will host a to-be-determined opponent on Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. in first-round tournament action.

Oneonta (12-12, 9-8 SUNYAC) would lead by as many as seven in the first half as Mikey McElroyled all scorers with 13 points en route to a 26-point night. The Red Dragons would connect on 50% of their shots (13-of-26) to efficiently hold a five-point edge, 32-27, at intermission.

Trailing, 34-29, with 18:42 on the second-half clock, Geneseo would score seven unanswered points to take its first lead of the game, 36-34, at 16:02. The lead would change hands five times in the next five minutes before Geneseo began to pull away. Trailing by one, 45-44, at 11:33, a three-pointer by junior forward James McKenna would give the Knights a 53-48 edge with 7:31 left in regulation.

The Red Dragons would pull within one, 55-54, with 6:36 remaining, but Geneseo would use an 8-0 run capped by a McKenna layup over the next three minutes to take a nine-point lead, 63-54, at 3:53 that it would maintain down the stretch.

Geneseo will close out the regular season on Saturday, hosting New Paltz at 4:00 p.m. The Knights will honor seniors Matt CurryThomas DeckerConnor Fedge and Jordan Jones in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony.
