HOLLAND, Mich. – Albion College could not keep up with a Hope College team that shot 55 percent from the field and 52 percent from 3-point range Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen remained in sole possession of first place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball standings with a 88-73 victory over the Britons.

Travell Oakes made an immediate impact in his first career start by scoring baskets on Albion's first two possessions. Oakes knocked down another shot as Albion led 8-7 five minutes into the contest.

Albion's hopes of scoring a road victory were dashed when Hope went on a 15-0 run to seize control of a game that was tied 12-12. Brock Benson, who produced 10 points off the bench, contributed a pair of baskets during the spurt.

Albion was never able to whittle the margin to single digits the rest of the way.

Oakes scored in double figures for the seventh time this season with 14 points. Oakes, who connected on 7-of-10 shots from the field, fell two points shy of matching his collegiate scoring high.

Lawrence Ridgell and Jordan Herron chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Britons.

Hope had five players in double figures, led by Ben Gardner's 20 points. Alex Eidson finished with 14, Corey McMahon led the reserves with 13, and Cody Stuive produced 10.

Albion, 11-10 overall and 5-5 against MIAA rivals, will play its next two games at home starting with a Wednesday night date with Adrian College.
