Bridgewater Snaps Losing Streak With Win At E&H

EMORY, Va. - The Bridgewater Eagles snapped a four-game losing streak with a key, 76-63, Old Dominion Athletic Conference road victory over Emory & Henry.

The Eagles took their first lead of the game at 6-5 on a jumper by Aaron Adams and a free throw by Tavis Stapleton made the score 7-5.

The score was tied at 7-7, 9-9 and 11-11 before two buckets by Tyler Mullins put the Wasps ahead 15-11. E&H held the lead until a layup by Romie Powell tied the score at 16-16 and a layup by Zach Walton put the Eagles on top 18-16 with 9:29 left in the first half.

Two foul shots by Kyle Welty pushed the lead to four before a 3-pointer by Emory & Henry's Malcolm Green trimmed the margin to a single-point, 20-19.

Bridgewater then opened up some breathing room for the first time with a 7-0 run.  Stapleton converted a pair of layups and Zach Hunter made 1-of-2 at the line for a 25-19 lead. Daniel McClain added a buckets after grabbing an offensive rebound to put the Eagles up 27-19 with 5:55 remaining in the opening half.

A three-point play by Mullins shaved the margin to five, but Reddick scored from inside and Benaiah Wise added a 3-point to increase the lead to double digits for the first time, 32-22.

Charles Smith and Reddick traded hoops before the Wasps finished the half by scoring the final four points to close to within 34-28 at the half.

The Eagles quickly pushed the lead back to double figures with a 6-1 run early in the second half. After trading buckets to start the half, a layup by Hunter gave the Eagle a 38-30 lead. Mullins hit 1-of-2 at the line for the Wasps but a tip-in by McClain and two free throws by Adams gave the Eagles a 42-31 edge with 15:59 left in the game.

The Bridgewater lead hovered between eight and 11 points until a 3-pointer by Hunter gave the Eagles a 51-39 lead. Kevin Anzenberger responded with a 3-ball on the Wasps' next possession but the Eagles rattled off a 8-0 spurt to take a 17-point lead.

Stapleton sandwiched a pair of baskets around a layup by Reddick to make the score 57-42 with 10:22 left to play. A layup by Ronnie Thomas finished off the run, giving Bridgewater its biggest lead of the game, 59-42, with 9:38 left.

The Wasps answered with a 7-0 flurry to cut the lead down to 10 points, 59-49, with 7:46 still to play, but the Eagles bounced back with a 9-2 spurt to put the game away. Reddick started the run with a three-point play  before Drew Henry scored for the Wasps, making the score 62-51. McClain then scored from inside and a jumper by Adams pushed the margin to 15. Reddick finished off the run with an inside basket for a 68-51 Bridgewater lead with less than five minutes left to play.

Bridgewater head coach made some lineup changes for Saturday's game and the moves paid immediate dividends. Stapleton and Reddick came off the bench and combined for 33 points with Reddick leading the way with 17. Stapleton scored 16 points, followed by McClain with 11 and Hunter with 10. McClain had one of his best outings of the season as he finished off a double-double with 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 36-30 edge on the glass.

Smith paced Emory & Henry (2-19, 0-12 in the ODAC) with 14 points and Mullins added 13.

The victory evened Bridgewater's overall record and 10-10 and the Eagles improved to 5-7 in the conference. The Eagles are back in action Tuesday evening when they host Shenandoah University. Game time is 7 p.m.
