Suderley Becomes Hartwick’s All-Time Leading Scorer in 81-75 Setback to Elmira

ELMIRA, NY- Senior forward Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) became the all-time leading scorer in Hartwick  men's basketball history on Friday night against Elmira. The Hawks eliminated a double-digit deficit in the second half but the Soaring Eagles proved to be too much in the end as 'Wick fell by the score of 81-75.

The loss drops the Hawks to 13-8 overall and 8-3 in the Empire 8. Elmira improves to 9-11 and 4-5 in the E8.

Suderley scored 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the Hawks. Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) added 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out four assists. Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY/Argyle) contributed 16 points.

With 1:18 left in the first half, Suderley scored on a jumper inside of the paint to tie the contest up at 32-all. With that basket, he moved past Tim McGraw to become the program's all-time leading scorer. McGraw's record of 1,878 points had stood for 26 years.

Elmira quickly got off to a 5-0 start with 18:17 to play in the first half but a 6-0 run by the Hawks gave them a 6-5 advantage at 16:42. The home team answered with a layup from Chris Cassidy to regain the restore the lead back to 7-6 at 16:12.

The Soaring Eagles led 17-12 with just under 11 minutes left in the first half. The score would remain that way for almost two and a half minutes as neither team could make a basket.

EC led 19-14 with 7:39 remaining in the first half. A 16-6 'Wick run, however, gave the Hawks a five point advantage, 30-25, with 3:18 showing on the game clock. Elmira came back to lead by two points after Derrick Vogel hit a three-pointer with just under two minutes remaining in the half. Suderley tied the game up on a jumper but Cassidy scored the last four points to give the Soaring Eagles a 36-32 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Elmira led by 11 points, 49-38, at the 16:08 mark. The Soaring Eagles led by as much as 15 points, 65-50, with 8:02 left to play in the game and were poised to run away with the game.

Hartwick would not go away quietly as it would go on a 12-3 run and trailed 68-62 with 3:42 remaining in the contest. The Soaring Eagles increased the lead back up to nine points, 73-64, at 1:38. 'Wick again would come back and an 8-2 run capped off by a traditional three-point play by Bradley with 36 seconds left made it a 75-73 game. It was as close as the Hawks could get as Elmira converted five free throws in the final 30 seconds to pull out the win.

The Hawks hit 29-of-57 (50.9%) of their field goals compared to 29-of-60 (48.3%) for the Soaring Eagles. The difference came in three-point shots as Elmira hit 10-of-27 (37%) to Hartwick's 4-of-16 (25%). The two teams were even from the free throw line as both squads hit 13-of-15 (86.7%) from the charity stripe.

'Wick dominated in the paint, 40-28. The Hawks had a slight advantage in rebounds, 31-29.

The Hawks will travel to Alfred to face the Saxons tomorrow afternoon. Game time from the McLane Center will be at 2 p.m.
