Balanced Attack Leads Elmhurst Past North Park

ELMHURST, Ill. - Six Players reached double figures to lead the Elmhurst men's basketball team past North Park 99-93 at R.A. Faganel Hall.

After leading by nine at halftime, Elmhurst (13-7, 5-4 CCIW) quickly opened up a double-digit lead before North Park (13-7, 5-4 CCIW) answered back. The Vikings used a 20-10 run to pull to within three points with 11 minutes remaining. A bucket by Pat Coleman put the Bluejays back on top by nine 7:45 left. A 6-0 run by the Vikings brought North Park to within three points after a Garrett Gatz three-pointer, but Kyle Wuest answered back with his own three-pointer to push the Bluejays' lead back to six points with 4:16 left on the clock.

The Vikings pulled back to within four points on a three-pointer from Aaron Weaver, but Taylor Baxter hit a driving lay-up to reestablish Elmhurst's six-point lead with 2:05 left.

North Park closed to within four points with less than a minute to play, but the Bluejays hit all eight of their free throw attempts down the stretch to ice the game away.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair that featured eight lead changes and four ties, Elmhurst grabbed control of the contest late in the first half, closing the final five minutes on a 14-6 run to open up a 46-37 lead at the half.

Elmhurst finished the contest shooting 45.6 percent (31-of-68) from the floor, including 36.0 percent (9-of-25) from downtown. The Bluejays shot 84.8 percent (28-of-33) from the foul line. Elmhurst dominated the game on the glass, outrebounding North Park 51-27, including an 18-7 edge in offensive rebounds. The Bluejays turned the 18 offensive boards into 19 second chance points.

Nick Sanford led the Bluejays with 22 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the foul line. He also pulled down a team-leading 14 rebounds. Coleman added 17 points while Nathan Rogers came off the bench to score a season-high 15 points, hitting three shots from beyond the arc in the process. Kyle Wuest added 11 points, seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Baxter and Erik Crittenden scored 10 points apiece in the victory.

North Park shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the floor and 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from downtown. The Vikings turned 13 Elmhurst turnovers into 21 points. The Vikings' offense was a three-man show comprised of Weaver, Juwan Henry and Garrett Gatz. The trio combined for 78 of the team's 93 points. Weaver finished with a game-high 35 points and 15 rebounds while Henry added 27 points for the Vikings. The duo combined for 33 of the squad's 37 points in the opening half and accounted for all 10 of the team's buckets. Gatz blew up in the second half, scoring 14 of his 16 points in the game's final 20 minutes, including hitting four three-pointers.

Elmhurst travels to Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, February 8.
