More news about: Lakeland

Travis Kell (Fr.-Madison, Wis.) scored 27 points in just his third collegiate game and the Lakeland College men's basketball team used good shooting to defeat Silver Lake College 90-76 Thursday night in a non-conference game at the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc Fieldhouse.

James Oshkeshequoam (Sr.-Keshena, Wis.) also scored 25 points and Kurt Jansen (Jr.-Wrightstown, Wis.) added 17, and the Muskies needed all of them to improve to 2-1 this season. Lakeland also stayed undefeated against Silver Lake in six all-time meetings.

The Muskies shot 52.2% from the field, making 35 of 67 field goals. Lakeland also warmed up from long range for the first time this season, hitting 11 of 25 three-point attempts, led by Oshkeshequoam's five triples.

The biggest boost came from Kell, who was unstoppable virtually the entire night. The 6-6 forward hit 13 of 21 shots, most coming from near the basket, and also added seven rebounds.

Kell scored 14 points in a fast-paced first half and combined with Oshkeshequoam and Jansen helped Lakeland slowly pull away from the stubborn hosts. The trio scored 40 of the team's 45 points in the first half as the Muskies used a late run to build a 45-35 halftime lead.

Silver Lake (2-7 overall) came out strong and led most of the first 15 minutes, going ahead by as much as six points and still leading 32-31 after a three-pointer by Dru Harris with 3:24 left in the half. Lakeland closed the half with a 14-3 run, though, with Kell scoring 10 straight points and Jansen adding two baskets right before halftime.

But pulling away was not easy for the Muskies, as the Lakers scored eight straight points in the second half to get the lead down to three at 50-47. Lakeland slowly pulled away again as the half went on, with Kell's basket with 7:34 to play giving the Muskies their largest lead at 74-58, but Silver Lake came back again and got within eight points on two occasions in the final five minutes.

Oshkeshequoam scored his 25 points in 26 minutes before fouling out, and also added a team-high eight rebounds. Kell and Jansen both added seven boards each, and Joey Burris (Jr.-Kiel, Wis.) added nine points, five rebounds and a team-best five assists.

Chris Jones came off the bench to score 17 points to lead the Lakers, while Darius Barnes added 13 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Silver Lake shot 40.3% (27 of 67) and was 15 of 25 from the free throw line.

Lakeland is back home Sunday to host Macalester (Minn.) College at 3 p.m. at Woltzen Gynasium.
