Borst-Smith, Sankes Pace Rochester Past Chicago

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sam Borst-Smith and Tyler Sankes combined for 41 points to lead the University of Rochester to a 66-56 men's college basketball victory over the University of Chicago at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Sunday afternoon.

Borst-Smith scored a game-high 21 points, hitting six of eight from the floor, eight of 12 from the line. He added five rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Sankes scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. He hit eight of 10 from the floor.

Rochester snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory. The Yellowjackets improved to 8-10 overall, 2-5 in the University Athletic Association. Chicago is 11-7 overall, 4-3 UAA.

Wayne Simon scored 11 points and nine rebounds (six offensive) to lead Chicago. Nate Brooks and Jordan Smith scored 10 points apiece.

The Maroons crashed the offensive glass in the second half, grabbing 15 of their own missed shots and turning those into 19 points.

A layup and free throw by Simon pulled Chicago within 34-30 with 13:16 to go. Jared Seltzer hit a trey for the Yellowjackets to boost the lead back to seven and Chicago never got closer than five after that.

The Yellowjackets opened quickly, jumping to a 9-2 lead after six minutes. Sankes had two layups while Borst-Smith had a layup and a three-pointer. The lead peaked at 12 on a 3-point goal from Mack Montague (22-10, 6:35 left). Rochester went into halftime leading, 27-17.

A 10-3 run by Chicago to start the second half cut Rochester's lead to three, 30-27, after Royce Muskeyvalley's layup and free throw. Seltzer hit a pair of 3-pointers in 12-5 run over three minutes that restored Rochester's lead to 11, 46-35, with 10:18 left. 

NOTES: The Super Bowl Sunday matchup between Rochester and Chicago marked the ninth time the teams played on Super Sunday (Chicago's won six of the nine)… Seltzer's double-double (11 pts., 10 rebounds) is his first.
