RICHARDSON, TX (02.01.14) - The UT Dallas men's basketball tied a school record with 16 three-pointers as the Comets continued their run through the American Southwest Conference Saturday afternoon with a 95-70 win over Howard Payne to wrap up a five-game home stand.

The No. 24-ranked Comets (now 17-2, 15-1 ASC) shot 50 percent or better for the sixth time in seven games and were 16-of-35 (45.7%) from three-point range en route to their 21st win in their last 22 ASC regular-season games, dating back to last season. Senior forward Kyle Schleigh led five Comets in double figures as he ended the night with 18 points and 10 rebounds for his eighth "double-double" of the season.


The Comets have now hit 29 three-pointers over the past two games as Saturday's tally of 16 long shots matched the school mark set on Jan. 18, 2010, against Ozarks (16-of-30). UTD leads the ASC from outside the arc, now at 40.1 percent on the season.

After trailing for the first 10 minutes of the opening half, the Comets came alive late in the first period, using 9-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Schleigh that gave UTD a 33-24 lead with 8:43 left before the break. The Comets shot 52.9 percent (18-of-34) as a team in the first half en route to a 55-42 halftime cushion, marking the third time this season with 50 or more points in the first half.

UTD then held the Yellow Jackets to just 29.2 percent accuracy in the second half as they pulled away for its seventh win of more than 20 points this season. It took less than five minutes into the second half for the Comets to secure a 20-point lead, grabbing a 67-56 lead with 15:09 left on a Schleigh jumper.  UTD led by as many as 32 points, 90-58 with 4:25 to play, before setting for the 25-point win.

Schleigh was 8-for-17 from the field, hitting 2-of-4 three-pointers, adding six assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Carter Nash came off the bench for 15 points and 10 boards, his second "double-double" of the season, while Matthew Medell had 13 points and Nolan Harvey and Ryan Smith each finished with 11 points. Harvey, Smith and Dmitriy Chernikov each finished with three three-pointers. UTD was 34-of-68 (50%) from the field and hit 11-of-16 (68.8%) free throws while out-rebounding the Yellow Jackets, 47-26.

For HPU (now 4-15, 4-12 ASC), Brandon Gould scored a game-high 23 points as three Yellow Jackets topped double digits. Quelan Lancaster and Donovan Ford each added 18 points. Gould also led HPU in rebounding, adding nine boards. After a hot start to the game, HPU finished the afternoon shooting 41.5 percent (22-of-53) from the field, hitting 6-of-13 (46.2%) three-pointers, and were 20-of-25 (80%) from the line.

The Comets hit the road Thursday to face Mississippi College. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Clinton, Miss.
