Bridgewater Turns Back Shenandoah, 66-61

WINCHESTER, Va. – Bridgewater College picked up a key road victory Wednesday evening by holding off Shenandoah University, 66-61, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball play.

The victory pushed the Eagles above the .500 mark in conference play with a 4-3 record. Bridgewater is 9-6 overall. Shenandoah dropped to 10-6 overall, 2-5 in the ODAC.

Junior forward Ed Reddick posted his second double-double of the season, leading the Eagles with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Zach Hunter came off the bench to score 14 points and Tavis Stapleton added 13.

Shenandoah's Avery Green, the ODAC's leading scorer, got his points as he scored just below his average with a game-high 21 points. The Eagles, however, silenced guard Jared Carithers, holding the ODAC's third-leading scorer to just two points. Carithers entered the contest averaging more than 17 points per game.

The Eagles got off to a slow start, falling behind 9-1 in the game's first four minutes.

Reddick scored the team's first bucket on a layup at the 15:31 mark. The basket ignited an 11-2 spurt that put the Eagles on top for the first time at 12-11 with 12:06 left in the half.

After his first bucket, Reddick added five more points before a layup by Xavier Austin made the score 11-8. A layup by Aaron Adams and a jumper by Hunter gave the Eagles their first lead.

The Eagles led by as many as six points several times in the first half, the last time on a Stapleton foul shot that made the score 32-26 with just 1:19 on the clock.

Shenandoah scored the final four points of the half, including a layup by Jimi Starks just before the buzzer, as the Hornets went to the locker room trailing by just two, 32-30.

The Eagles maintained its slim lead until buckets by Starks and Green put the Hornets ahead for the first time in the second half, 43-40, with 15:03 left.

Kenneth Waugh tied the score with a 3-pointer at the 14:43 mark and neither team scored again for almost three minutes. Starks then hit a foul shot to put the Hornets back on top before a Stapleton 3-pointer pushed the Eagles ahead, 46-44, with 11:12 remaining in the game.

Scoring was tough over the next five minutes as a jumper by Alston gave the Hornets a 51-48 advantage with 6:42 left.

The Eagles then put together a key 9-0 spurt to open up a six-point lead. A layup by Reddick made it a one-point game before a jumper by Kyle Welty put the Eagles ahead to stay, 52-51. After Green missed two foul shots, Welty knocked down a 3-pointer for a 55-51 Eagles lead. After another empty possession for the Hornets, Ronnie Thomas capped the run with a layup, giving the Eagles a 57-51 lead at the 4:41 mark.

Green and Hunter traded hoops before a three-point play by Green pulled Shenandoah to within three, 59-56, with 2:45 left.

The teams traded empty possessions until Hunter made two free throws with just 50 seconds left to give the Eagles a 61-56 lead.

After a Shenandoah turnover, Reddick hit 1-of-2 at the line to put the Eagles on top 62-56. Two more foul shots by Hunter pushed the lead to eight before a 3-pointer by Green kept the Hornets alive, trimming the deficit to 64-59 with 25 seconds to go.

The Eagles then turned the ball over and Bryce Mitchell converted for the Hornets to make it a one possession game, 64-61, with 10 ticks remaining.

Hunter then made two crucial fouls shots to put the finishing touches on the Eagles 66-61 victory.

The Eagles made 23-of-52 field goal attempts for 43.4 percent while the Hornets connected on 23-of-51 shots for 45.1 percent accuracy. The difference came at the foul line where the Eagles made 16-of-23 shots while the Hornets struggled mightily, making just 11-of-25 foul shots.

Bridgewater also won the battle on the boards by a slim 35-33 margin. In addition to Reddick's 12 rebounds, Stapleton added six boards from his guard spot. Kevin Lescaint pulled down 10 rebounds for the Hornets.

The Eagles return to action Saturday afternoon when they host Lynchburg College in another key conference matchup.
