Wheaton (Ill.) men's basketball team uses a strong second half in an 84-63 victory against North Park

Wheaton, Ill.  – The Wheaton Thunder men's basketball team used a strong second half at both ends of the court to earn an 84-63 victory against North Park (3-14/0-6 CCIW) on Wednesday night in Wheaton's King Arena. The Thunder improves to 11-6 on the season, with a 4-2 record in conference play.

Wheaton took an early 19-10 lead in the first seven minutes of action tonight. Wheaton maintained its lead with a 34-27 advantage as 5:47 remained in the first half. A conventional three-point play by North Park's Juwan Henry sparked a surge of 17 unanswered points for the guests. Ryan Hyrn made three three-pointer in the 17-0 run as North Park gained a 44-34 lead with 1:55 remaining in the first half. The Vikings held a 46-39 lead at halftime as the guests shot a stellar 60% (18-30) from the field, including 66.7% (8-12) behind the three-point arc.

Wheaton scored the first six points of the second half as part of a 23-5 Thunder scoring run in the first 10 minutes of the final half that gave the hosts a 62-51 lead. Tyler Peters (eight points), Brayden Teuscher (seven points) and Caleb DeMoss (six points) combined to score 21 of Wheaton's 23 points in key second-half run. Wheaton would go on to lead by as many as 25 points in the second half, holding an 81-56 lead with 3:20 left in regulation. 

Following North Park's strong first half, the Thunder defense held the Vikings to just 24% (6-25) shooting in the second half, including only 1-of-5 from three-point range. The hosts out-scored North Park 45-17 in the final 20 minutes of action.

DeMoss, Teuscher and Peters each scored 19 points to lead the Thunder offense. DeMoss and Teuscher each contributed five assists and Peters collected six rebounds. Nate Haynes scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.

Wheaton recorded a 50.9% (28-55) field goal percentage, including 39.1% (9-23) from three-point range and 76% (19-25) at the free throw line. The Vikings shot 43.6% (24-55) from the field, with 52.9% (9-17) from three-point range and 50% (6-12) at the charity stripe. Wheaton owned a 33-32 edge in rebounding and North Park held a 12-11 edge on the offensive glass.

Juwan Henry led the Vikings with 19 points, all in the first half. Henry also tallied six rebounds, with four assists. Aaron Weaver scored 11 points for the Vikings and Hyrn added nine points.
