Fighting Scots pull away to CCC win over UNE

WENHAM, Mass. -- Gordon College closed the 1st half with a 16-6 run to gain a double digit advantage and never looked back, recording an 84-59 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball victory over the University of New England on Wednesday evening (Jan. 15) at the Bennett Center.

Hans Miersma paced the Fighting Scots (7-6, 5-2 CCC) with 17 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Alex Carnes, Luke Hamilton, and Park Thomas went for 14, 12, and 11 points, respectively, and each totaled six boards. Park also dished out eight assists.

The hosts shot an impressive 58 percent (32 of 55) from the field in the contest to help overcome 20 turnovers. Hamilton registered all of his points from behind the three-point arc, and Gordon finished with 11 treys as a team.

Additionally, the Fighting Scots out-rebounded their opponents by a 45-25 margin.

UNE (1-13, 1-6 CCC) received 13 points and three steals from first-year Justin Pollard. Classmate Andy Kalu added seven points off the bench.

The Nor'easters led by as many as six (19-13) in the early going, but trailed 25-23 with a little more than seven minutes left in the opening frame. From there, Gordon extended the gap to 12 (41-29) by halftime.

Still up by 12 (56-44) midway through the 2nd half, the Fighting Scots used a 9-1 spurt in 2:32 to push the lead to 20.

Gordon visits Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday, the same day that UNE travels to Roger Williams University.
