Saints Extend Winning Streak to Three Games With a 65-58 Win Over Thiel

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College men's basketball team extended its winning streak to three games as it defeated Thiel College, 65-58, today (Saturday, January 11, 2014) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the win, the Saints improve to 5-9 overall and 4-1 in the PAC. With the loss, the Tomcats fall to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the PAC.

Thiel took an early 13-10 lead when Eric Mallinger made a lay-up with 14:53 to play in the first half. Thomas More closed out the half on a 23-10 run to take a 33-23 at halftime when freshman guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) made a jumper with 17-seconds to play in the half.

Thomas More opened the second half on a 5-2 run capped by a lay-up by senior forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) to increase the lead to 38-25 with 18:34 to play in the game. The Tomcats answered with a 26-16 run to cut the lead to 54-51 with 4:54 to play in the game when Luke Kochka made a lay-up. The Saints used a 4-0 run to extend the lead to 58-51 when senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) made a lay-up with 3:16 to play in the second half. Thiel responded with a 4-0 run capped by a Justin Dade lay-up with 1:23 to play in the game to cut the lead to 58-55. That would be as close as Thiel would come as Thomas More closed out the game on a 7-3 run capped by two free-throws by junior guard Eliot Pipes (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) with two-seconds to play for the 65-58 win.

Junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) led the team in scoring with 16 points, while senior guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) and Housley just missed double-figure scoring with nine points each. Housley led the team on the boards with eight rebounds, while Pipes led the team in steals with three and Berlekamp and Hayes led the team in assists with four each.

The Saints return to action on Wednesday (January 15) when they travel to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania to play Westminster College. The PAC game is scheduled to tip-off at 8 p.m. at the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
