Oxy Runs Into Hot Whittier Team at Full Strength

WHITTIER — The road woes continued for the Occidental College men's basketball team on Wednesday night.

Despite double-doubles from Andrew Johnson and Ty Cobb, the Tigers were sloppy with the ball against Whittier's full-court pressure in a 95-63 loss to the Poets.

Oxy falls to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in SCIAC play. Whittier, which started out the season slow, improves to 7-5 and 1-2, and remains unbeaten at home.

The Tigers turned the ball over 25 times.

Johnson scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Cobb chipped in 11 points and 11 rebounds. Oxy point guard Kory Hamane added 12 points.

Nick Demusis led Whittier with a game-high 23 points, including 4 for 5 shooting from the 3pt-line. The Poets got a boost from the return of starters Chris Barnes-William, who also went 4 for 5 from beyond the arc for 16 points, and big man Tyree Landrum who had 19 points and 11 boards. Both have missed a good portion of the preseason with injuries.

"When they are at full strength they are tough to beat," Oxy coach Brian Newhall said. "They are well-coached and have some guys that can play. They're trending up at the right time and they are going to be a difficult matchup for a lot of teams in the SCIAC."

The Tigers played without Jay Miller and Spencer Levy, who missed the game due to injury. Miller and Levy are averaging a combined 21 points per game and have started nine games between them.

Despite two big road losses, Oxy is still .500 with a pair of chances to upset the league's two best teams at home. The Tigers play first-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 5 p.m. on Saturday and second-place Pomona-Pitzer on Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

"We have to put the losses to Cal Lutheran and Whittier behind us quickly," Newhall said. "The good news is that it doesn't matter if you lose by 20 points or two points. We are still tied for third with 12 more chances in SCIAC play."
