INDIANOLA, Iowa – Grinnell College's Jack Taylor '15 set a pair of school and Midwest Conference records as the Pioneer men's basketball team outlasted Simpson College 156-150 Saturday afternoon.

Taylor broke marks in both free throws made and free throws attempted, going 24-of-27 at the stripe. The previous school record for makes was Griffin Lentsch with 20 in 2011, while Lentsch and Bob Winter (1953) held the old mark for attempts with 22.

The conference record for both makes and attempts was established by Monmouth College's Bob Tanney in 1979 (23 and 26, respectively).

Taylor finished with a game-high 47 points, while Patrick Maher '14 established a double-double with 21 points and 17 assists. The latter total ranks third in school history.

Aaron Levin '14 added 34 points and Luke Yeager '15 had 26. Maher also had four steals, Nick Curta '17 and Tague Zachary '15 added two blocks each and Zachary and Stuart Hoegh '17 grabbed five boards apiece.

As a team, Grinnell was a solid 45-of-54 from the free throw line. With the win, Grinnell moved to 7-1 on the season while Simpson fell to 1-8.

The host Storm built a 45-35 lead midway through the first half, but Grinnell reversed its fortunes with a 30-11 run to go ahead 65-56. Simpson climbed back into contention, though, and made it 79-73 at intermission.

The second half was back and forth the entire way before Grinnell stretched its lead to 145-135 on Taylor's 3-pointer with 4:23 left. Simpson made a few comebacks, reducing the gap to 151-148 with :23 led before Yeager made a layup and Maher two free throws to push the Pioneers ahead 155-148 in the waning seconds.

Simpson managed a basket after that before Taylor secured the victory with a free throw.

Grinnell is off until Jan. 4 when it plays at Ripon College.
