Dixon Free Throws Lead Roberts Past Rochester in Wendy's Classic

NORTH CHILI, NY- Sophomore Tyrel Dixon sank two free throws with 2.6 seconds to play to lift host Roberts Wesleyan College to a 62-60 victory in the semifinals of the 2013 Wendy's College Classic over the University of Rochester men's basketball team on Friday night.

The Redhawks (4-2) move on to their first title game since the 1999-2000 season while the Yellowjackets (4-4) are relegated to the third place for the second time in three seasons.

Dixon scored a game high 19 points and added seven rebounds and five assists to pace Roberts. UR had three players in double figure scoring with sophomore Tyler Sankes leading the way with 14 points while Kevin Sheehy added 12 and Zach Ayers chipped in 10.

After a slow start shooting where UR hit just five of 19 shots to begin the game, the Yellowjacket bench provided three treys to build a 20-16 lead 10:30 in. The freshmen Ayers and classmate Mack Montague along with sophomore Jared Seltzer all hit shots from behind the arc.

Roberts Wesleyan would respond with a 12-2 run to build a 28-22 lead. The Redhawks Kevin Madiamba and William Bromirski each chipped in five points during the spurt. The run was halted by a Sheehy 3-pointer with five minutes to go in the half.

At the break, Roberts held a 37-29 lead after Jordan McBride hit a long 30 foot 3-pointer with three seconds left on the clock, giving the Redhawks their biggest lead of the game. The 'Jackets shot just 10-30 (33%) from the floor in the half while Roberts was at 52%, making 15-29 shots in the period.

In the second half, a Bromirski three with 11:22 ignited the Voller Gymnasium crowd, capping a 7-0 burst that gave Roberts its biggest lead of the night at 10, leading 50-40.

Rochester would battle back though, rattling off a 16-6 run to pull even at 56 with 3:06 remaining. The freshman Ayers played a big part in the run, scoring six points while Sheehy added five.

The Redhawks would answer back, with Tyrel Dixon and Patrick Downer hitting tough shots in the paint to put the home team back up by four with just over two minutes to play.

Two Vernon free throws along with a Tyler Sankes layup evened the score at 60 before Roberts held the ball and earned the Dixon free throw attempts to win the game.

Rochester ended the contest shooting 38% (22-58) from the floor while Roberts cooled off in the second half and finished with a 44% (24-55) mark shooting. UR made eight 3-pointers in the game to Roberts' seven and Rochester grabbed four more rebounds than the Redhawks (36-32).

Rochester played in the 3rd place game against St. John Fisher College on Saturday at 3 pm.
