Chiasson's Career Day Lifts Mariners Over UMA

CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime's Tyler Chiasson recorded career highs in points (26), rebounds (13) and assists (5) to lead the Mariners to an 82-74 win over Maine-Augusta in non-conference men's basketball game Thursday. Maine Maritime improved to 1-5, while the Moose fell to 1-10.

Tyler Gilson added 11 points and nine boards for MMA, Zachary Radcliffe and Jason Hatch each added 11 points and Garrett Libby 10 for the Mariners.

Brandon Rogers and Keith Chelsey recorded double-doubles for UMA. Rogers finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds and Chelsey had 10 points and 13 boards. Garrett Alley pumped in 15 points and Jesse Smith finished with 14.

The Moose opened the game with a five-point, 8-3, lead after a pair of free throws from Rogers. Two more free throws from Rogers midway through the half put UMA ahead 14-10 before the Mariners went on a 7-0 run to lead 17-14 with 8:53 left in the half. John-Peter Michaud and Hatch had layups in the run for MMA and Chiasson drained a three. 

UMA evened the game twice in the first half, the last time coming after Smith's layup made it 20-20 with six minutes remaining. The Mariners ended the half on an 11-7 run to lead 31-27 at the break. 

Maine Maritime led by 10, 45-35, early in the second half before UMA used a 13-3 scoring run to tie the game at 48 after an Alley jumper with 11:51 left in the game. The Mariners never trailed the remainder of the game and led by as many as 10 twice, on a Libby three with 4:54 (76-66) left in the game and pair of Hatch free throws with 33 seconds remaining in the game.

Maine Maritime returns to the court Saturday, 1 p.m., at Husson.
