Thomas More Falls, 76-73,at Grove City in PAC Opener

(GROVE CITY, Pa.) - Senior guard D'Carlo Hayes (Louisville, Ky./Male) scored a game-high 29 points, but it wasn't enough as the Thomas More College men's basketball team fell, 76-73, to Grove City College tonight (Wednesday, December 4, 2013) in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at the Grove City College Arena in Gove City, Pennsylvania.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the PAC. With the win, the Wolverines improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the PAC.

Grove City jumped out to a 12-6 lead with 15:33 to play in the first half when Erick Carlstrom converted an old fashion three-point play. The Saints answered with an 11-3 run to take a 17-15 lead on a Hayes jumper with 12:46 to play in the half. The Wolverines used a 16-4 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 31-21 with 6:06 to play in the first half when J.T. Schwartz made two free-throws. Thomas More closed out the half on a 10-7 run to cut the lead to 38-31 at halftime when Hayes made a three-pointer with five-seconds to play in the half.

Thomas More opened the second half on a 30-23 to tie the game at 61-61 when junior forward Chris Richard (Louisville, Ky./Southern) made one-of-two free-throws with 6:17 to play in the game. Grove City answered with a 7-2 run to take a 68-63 lead when Mitch Marmelstein made one-of-two free-throw with 3:03 to play in the game. The Saints responded with a 7-3 run to cut the lead to 71-70 with 1:00 when freshman guard Drew Mays (Union, Ky./Ryle) made a three-pointer. That would be as close as the Saints would come as Grove City closed out the game on a 5-3 run for the 76-73 victory.

Two other Saints joined Hayes in double-figure scoring as junior guard/forward Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) scored 20 and Richard added 11. Richard led the team on the boards with 10 rebounds to complete a double-double. Mumford led the team in assists with five.

The Saints return to action on Saturday (December 7) when they host Waynesburg University. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 3 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
