Montclair State Wins Second Straight as Red Hawks Beat Centenary, 74-40

Montclair, NJ – Senior forward Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ, Warren Hills) posted his second straight double-double and third in four games this season as Montclair State won its second consecutive contest with a 74-40 win over Centenary College at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.

Senior guard Daniel Singleton (Neptune, NJ, Neptune) added 15 points, three rebounds and four assists as the Red Hawks evened their record at 2-2 while knocking off the Cyclones (1-4) for the 10th time in as many all-time meetings.

Sophomore guard Clayton Roker (New City, NY / Clarkstown South) had 12 points for Centenary which was coming off its first win of the season on Saturday.

MSU led virtually wire-to-wire in the contest and went on a 10-1 run to turn a 2-2 tie into a 12-3 lead with 13:07 to go in the first half. Singleton snapped the deadlock with a jumper and Erick Lofton-Harris (Union, NJ, Union) hit once from the line. After a free throw by Centenary, Angel Gonzalez (Ocala, FL, Meadowbrook Academy) and Singleton scored back-to-back buckets with sophomore Kevin McGorry draining a three-pointer for the nine-point lead.

The Cyclones would get back to six points at 15-9 with 10:07 left on a jumper by Roker however Montclair widened the lead to 25-10 as Goldson scored six points in a another 10-1 run. Kazim Jones (Newark, NJ, Newark Tech) connected one from the line to give the Red Hawks their largest lead of the half at 33-17 and MSU maintained that lead into the break holding a 37-31 advantage.

Gonzalez had 11 of his 13 points in the opening half as Montclair State shot 52 percent (16-of-31) from the field, including three three-point field goals while the Cyclones were cold from the floor connecting on just 7-of-29 attempts (24 percent) while making just 1-of-9 from behind the arc.

Goldson, who had 39 points and 18 rebounds in his previous outing on Saturday, was 9-of-13 from the floor and its 27-of-37 in his last two games. The double-double was the 20th of his career and he has registered 10 or more rebounds in his last six games dating back to last season.

Gonzalez added three assists and three steals with senior Michael Spence (Irvington, NJ, Manchester Regional) grabbing a team-best 11 rebounds. Kris Bergstol (New City, NY, Clarkstown South) had seven points off the bench as MSU outrebounded the Cyclones 45-36 in the game

Montclair State is now off until Wednesday, December 1 when it returns to action with an NJAC matchup at the Golden Dome in Newark, NJ against Rutgers-Newark with tip off scheduled for 8:00 pm.
