Marietta moves to 3-0 with 78-65 win over Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Marietta College men's basketball team went on the road for the first time this season and came away with a 78-65 win over Waynesburg University Wednesday (Nov. 20) evening. The Pioneers remain unbeaten at 3-0 overall, while the Yellow Jackets move to 2-1 on the season.

The teams traded leads in the early going until sophomore RaNeal Ewing put the Pioneers in front for good on a layup with 14:18 left in the first half. Marietta went up by as many as 10 points, 29-19, in the opening period but Waynesburg battled back.

A.J. Davis got an offensive rebound and laid the ball in for a 31-26 Pioneer lead at halftime. Marietta shot an uncharacteristic 21.4% (3-of-14) from three-point range in the half but forced nine Yellow Jacket turnovers to hold on to the lead.

Marietta came out of the locker room and quickly pushed the lead to 11 points, 42-31, with 17:51 left in the game. A pair of Ewing free throws at the 11:34 mark made it a 10-point game, 52-42.

Waynesburg refused to go away quietly and went on a 10-2 run closing to within two points, 54-52, with 8:41 remaining. The Pioneers gradually pushed the lead back to double digits, 67-57, with just over two minutes left on the clock.

Solid free throw shooting from the Pioneers down the stretch kept the Yellow Jackets from mounting a comeback. Marietta was 20-of-26 (76.9%) at the line in the second half.

Davis and Ewing each poured in 19 points to lead Marietta's offensive attack. Davis was 7-of-12 from the floor, including three treys, and grabbed eight rebounds, while Ewing hit 10-of-11 free throws.

Junior Brennan McKean nailed three from long range and finished with 16 points. Junior Garrett Stephenson added nine points in the post to go along with seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Marietta's senior playmaker Tyler Hammond dished out six assists and pulled down seven rebounds.

Waynesburg juniors Kenny Klase and Jacob Fleegle scored 15 and 12 points, respectively.  Classmate Jason Propst had 12 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Marietta out rebounded the Yellow Jackets 42-37. The Pioneers also forced 16 Waynesburg turnovers, while committing 14.

Marietta shot 24-of-63 (38.1%) from the floor, 8-of-25 (32.0%) from three-point range and 22-of-31 (76.9%) at the charity stripe. Waynesburg was 26-of-62 (41.9%) from the floor, 6-of-20 (30.0%) behind the arc and just 7-of-15 (46.7%) at the line.

Marietta stays on the road and travels to Denison University Saturday (Nov. 23) for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
