OSWEGO, N.Y. – Led by a game-high 22 points from sophomore Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy), the Manhattanville men's basketball team shot a sizzling 60.0 percent from the field to defeat Lancaster Bible by the score of 95-80 in the consolation game of the 2013 Max Ziel Tournament, hosted by SUNY Oswego on Saturday afternoon at Max Ziel Gymnasium.

The Valiants were on their game offensively one day after scoring just 69 points in a loss to Neumann, as both the point total and the shooting percentage were the best for the Valiants since putting up 115 on 62.7 percent shooting in an overtime victory over King's (Pa.) on January 29, 2011.

Maestre was the maestro of the offensive attack, shooting 7 of 9 from the field and 7 of 8 from the charity stripe on the way to a 22-point day. Senior Jack Bramswig(Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) had 17 points and classmate Colin Campbell (Miami, Fla./LaSalle) chipped in 14 of his own, as 10 different players had at least two points for Manhattanville (1-1).

Dondre Perry had 21 points and CJ Dunston added 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Lancaster Bible (0-2), which shot itself out of the game with 9 of 25 shooting (36.0 percent) in the first half that allowed the Valiants to open up a big lead.

Manhattanville started strong out of the gates, scoring 16 of the game's first 18 points to jump out to a 16-2 advantage 6:10 into the contest. Junior Connor Quigley (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) had all eight of his points during the quick start, sinking a jumper and two long balls on three straight Valiant possessions. Meanwhile, the Valiants held the Chargers to 1-for-8 shooting with four turnovers during the span.

The lead grew to 13 at 18-5 after a layup by sophomore Juan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons), but Lancaster Bible got right back into the game thanks to a 17-5 run that suddenly made it a one-point game (23-22) with 6:52 remaining in the half. However, Manhattanville came right back with another run of its own, scoring 18 of the next 22 points to get the lead back up to 15 with under two to go. Freshman Charles Nardone (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) had a team-best six points during the run, capping the stretch with a jumper that made it 41-26 with 1:44 left.

The Valiants took a 46-31 lead into the break thanks in large part to its 20-8 edge in bench points as well as a decisive 18-2 advantage in points off turnovers. Campbell, Bramswig and Quigley all led the team with eight points each over the first 20 minutes.

Maestre started the second half with a layup that upped the Valiant lead to 17, but the Chargers did not go away, eventually whittling the lead down to six points at 57-51 following a pair of Dunston free throws with 13:11 remaining. The lead never got that small again following two free throws from junior Niko Emanuilidis (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) and a layup by Camacho that pushed the advantage back to 10, and the Valiants enjoyed a double-digit lead for almost the entire rest of the way.

Both teams took 55 shots on the day, with Manhattanville making 33 to finish at 60.0 percent shooting and Lancaster Bible sinking only 26 to end the afternoon at 47.3 percent. Neither team shot well from the line, with the Valiants connecting at a 63.2 percent (24 for 38) clip and the Chargers even worse at 59.5 percent (22 for 37).

Manhattanville is scheduled to open its home slate on Tuesday night, as the Valiants will face Mount St. Mary beginning at 7 p.m. at Kennedy Gymnasium. The live GoValiants.TV video broadcast will begin at approximately 6:55 p.m.
