Men's Basketball Earns win over Lehman

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team snapped a three game losing streak, including a two game conference losing streak, by picking up a big win over CUNYAC foe Lehman College 86-78 at the Doghouse Monday evening.
 
John Jay is now 12-8 (8-3 CUNYAC) after the win. Lehman College falls to 7-13 (2-9 CUNYAC).
 
The Bloodhounds got a big effort by Darryl Dennis with 27 points and three steals, while Kris Owens had 16 points. Jamar Harry scored 15 points in the win. Lehman College was led by Driton Hasangjekaj with 21 points and nine rebounds.
 
After a score that was close most of the first half and saw seven lead changes and six ties, John Jay took the lead for good with 5:42 remaining on a Harry lay-up. The Bloodhounds built the lead to as much as seven in the closing moments of the period and led 47-40 at halftime.
 
John Jay opened the first half on an 8-0 run to build a 15-point lead as the Bloodhounds led 55-40 with 17:28 to go.
 
The Bloodhounds maintained a comfortable lead and appeared to be on their way to an easy win in the final few minutes. John Jay was ahead by 22 and led 78-56 with just under five minutes remaining before the Lightning struck with a ferocious rally to get back into the contest.
 
After trailing by 22, Lehman outscored John Jay 22-5 over the next five minutes to cut deficit to five as the Lightning trailed 83-78 with just under twenty seconds to play.
 
But clutch free throw shooting by the Bloodhounds in the closing seconds, along with a costly turnover by Lehman on a key possession allowed John Jay to hold off the comeback and finish off the season sweep of the Lightning.
 
John Jay is back in action on Wed. Jan. 30 at Hunter College at 7 p.m.
